7950- first impressions

Thread Starter
Im making this thread just to give others who may be considering getting a 7900 series card due to the new "never settle reloaded bundle" a heads up on what they might expect going from a crossfire 68XX 3 gpu/ 69XX 2 gpu to a shiny new 79XX series single card..

New card- powercolor pcs+ 7950

Previous- 6870 X3 (6870x2 + 6870 in cf)

thus far I have only installed a few of my games again.. but so far...

metro 2033-

Runs much better on the higher gpu power of the 6870x3 setup even though it did have vram bottleneck.
playing the intro through wiith stock clocks my minimum frames where 19.. with AAA anti aliasing
where as I could play quite happily play with 4x catalyst AA prior with frames only dipping to around the 30's
(kind of unexpected)

Raiderz-

Runs exponentially better on the 7950...
gpu usage with the X3 sat at 100% and vram was nowhere near maxing
but frames would drop into high 30's all the time...
Now with the 7950.. I haven't seen a single drop from the vsync cap(this one really surprises me)

Mass effect 3-

sits on syc cap with both card setups.(not intensive game but one of the first I re-installed)

the witcher 2 assassin of kings enhanced edition-

Performance win to the 6870's again..
sits at frame cap more often with the 7950... but suffers much worse fps dips
(full on slideshow if you quick turn with ubersampling on, where as the X3 handled it very nicely)

Boarderlands 2

This one is a definitive 7950 win..
playing through the leviathan boss battle as a test the 6870's would sit stable at sync cap with
the occasional drop into the 50's....
7950.... never dropped..

thus far while taking a hit in two of my favorite games Im rather damn impressed with the 7950
(mainly because it pulls roughly the same amount of power as just ONE of my 6870 gpu's)

and a note on the powercolor pcs+ alone.. the cooler seems to be top notch with hw monitor reading my max temp at only 62
over all these tests. (thus improving my ambient case temp)
the card is wonderfully braced by the black stripping along the side (don't think this one will flex easily over long periods of use)

all these observations have been made on a 1920x1080 scenario

no REAL purpose to the thread other than putting my opinion out

may post further experiences as I install more games.

Nice write up, you had some nice horsepower with 3 6870's only limiting on vram. Vram was my deciding factor as I went from a single 6870 to a single 7950. I was very impressed with my improvements but again I only had a single 6870. Now I have stepped into the crossfire realm and added a second Sapphire Boost 7950 and am thoroughly impressed with the boost in FPS, not that a single wasn't enough. I am currently playing through Metro 2033 and I must say the FPS gain is very nice with dips in the mid 50's to 120+ depending on what is going on. This is all on stock clocks, I figure if im not benching and just playing games 2 7950's at stock clocks is plenty for a single 1920 X 1080 monitor smile.gif

Ehh I was going to wait for the 8XXX series before I upgraded, but I saw the reloaded offer.... and thats all she wrote lol
I was going to buy crysis 3 and bioshock on release day regardless(at least $100 each here) so as far as I saw it, it was a 7950 for $110
I will get a second after the release of the 8XXX series for more than likely more than I payed now(in my mind I only payed $110 for the card) even with price drops and I don't really see a game release In the near future that will need more than 2x OCed 7950's (as I am switching from multi monitor to a single projector)
