HAF X Water Cooling Project - loop configuration?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

So. I plan on venturing into the territory of water cooling soon, and I need a little advice. First, I want to let you know my plans to get started. I will be cooling a i7 930 (@4ghx) and a reference GTX 680 with this loop in a HAF X case. I plan (at first at least - I may add a 120 rad at a later date if needed) doing this with a single rad and pump and a push-pull set-up. I plan to purchase a "EK-KIT H3O - Supreme HFX 360 Water Cooling Kit" to do this. I think this is a good starting point for me to get into water cooling, as it is cheap and has almost everything I need to get the job done. From reviews, it also looks like a very solid kit. I will also be buying an EK 680 block, coolant, and (2) compression fittings to go with this (please see links below). Here's are my questions:

1. Am I missing anything? Is there anything else I should purchase to get the job done? More tubing possibly (in case I make mistakes)?

2. Does this look like an OK loop rout for what I want to accomplish? If not, please feel free to make suggestions. I am going for the most clean and good looking loop I can achieve.

3. Do I only need one bottle of coolant?

Thank you for any response! I really appreciate it!

From my experience you might want to purchase two 90 degree rotary fittings for your cpu (such as http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=59_346_393_611_626&products_id=27467). The bend radius to connect your cpu to the radiator and the gpu to the cpu is pretty small if you don't use angled fittings, and that can create kinks pretty easily in 3/8 by 1/2 inch tubing.

Other than that, it looks pretty good

Awesome! Thank you! I will pick up a couple of those fittings as well so I can pick and choose as I go. Any other comments/concerns?

Changing things up a little bit. Going with this kit instead:

http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=33549

I will be choosing:
-intel socket
-red led's
-1650 rpm fans
-3/8"x5/8" fittings
-Primoflex tubing UV red (will 6' be enough?)
-black chrome fittings

I will also be getting either that ek block or a XSPC 680 block and an extra 2 3/8"x5/8" compression fittings (may get 2 45's for connecting cpu and gpu 0r 2 90's). Everything seem good?

Buy more than 6' of tubing, You don't want to miss on a few cuts and then be out. I usually order 1.5x what I think I'll need. If it's your first loop, I'd order 2x

That's great advice and I planned on getting some extra. Really, my only question left is what extra fittings I should get. I figure a 45 coming off the GPU and the cpu would be the easiest way to connect the two. I just hate to get everything and then decide I should have gotten a 90 or an extra 45 or something.

You would probably be fine with one 45 degree fitting on your cpu going to a straight fitting on the gpu. Your tubing is flexible enough that it will bend easily, but with a 45 degree fitting it won't bend too sharply as would cause a kink.

If you have the money you might also want to put a 45 degree fitting on the radiator where you're connecting the radiator to the cpu block.

If you can get past the messiness and blur (it's an old pic), you can see the segment where I connected my cpu block to my RX360 in my Haf X. I'm using 3/4 OD tubing which is less flexible than the tubing you're using, but it was a royal pain to get those short tubes connected. If I had bought a 45 degree fitting it would have been much easier and I wouldn't have to worry as much about a leak forming at one of those fittings.

Thank you so much for that picture. That is absolutely perfect! I will be going with (more or less) the same exact routing as that looks very clean! I will pick up that that extra 45 for the rad and probably just run the outlet from the video card out of the side of a XSPC 680 block. Just to be sure, I assume that the pump is going out to the cpu, then to rad, then to gpu, then back to pump? Thanks again!

edit: also, are you running push pull?

edit 2: do you think that a 45* fitting would fit over that fan on the rad?
