Advice when switching from AMD to Nvidia.

Thread Starter
Sorry to troll so many threads but this is a big day for me (I never get to put nice things in my rig, just second hand crap, and stuff I find laying around clearance sections at Best Buy and when the rich ***** College kids around Tufts, Harvard, and M.I.T. move out and decide to just leave their towers out in front of their apartments.)

Should I just do a full Windows 8 reinstall, or really go bezerek trying to remove all traces of AMD drivers before installing my incoming GTX 670?

I'm curious what the procedure has become on this subject considering I just realized I haven't switched GFX card manufacturers since I was still leading a shambling guild in WOW back in 2006.

Nuke all pathetic 90 Gigs of my SSD and do a full reinstall or just try to clean as many things out of my old drivers as possible?

i've switched from ati/nvidia 4 or 5 times on my htpc/media server without any problems, just uninstalled drivers, turned it off, put new card in and re-installed.

You can follow the guide in my signature, or do a fresh install. I personally cant stand windows 8 but thats just a preference thing
And the results will be similar

Eh I jumped on the Bandwagon for 15 bucks to save myself any aggravation in the future. I didn't want to get stuck left out and trying to save 200 bucks I didn't have if some crazy future optimization is only available on Windows 8 down the road, and I blew my chance to get it when Microsoft was giving it away. It ain't so bad honestly, I just use Classic shell, never touch the start screen, and pretend I'm running Windows 7.

That being said I will try your guide, but something tells me a wipe may be in order simply for the amount of times I've had to play with this broken 7850 and trying to get it to work with multiple driver revisions and what not. Also my sweet x300 pro that is currently powering this system.

Thanks as always though.

Thats usually the fastest method but as ripsaw pointed out, if your not benchmarking it and dont mind a bloated os, a full wipe is not nessisary... Wile your x300 is in there, download and put the driver on the desktop, power down and swap the card, power up and cancel the plug and play, and manually install the driver from the desktop, after install and reboot, move or delete your driver file.

I recently switched from a 6970 crossfire setup to a 680. After uninstalling all of the AMD software and drivers, I ran drivesweeper in safe mode. Had no issues using that method.
