Diagnosing random restarts - Page 2

That PSU should be plenty to run what you are running.I'm going to say it's the motherboard.2+1 phase power..giga..older..VRMs are probably getting hot..try pointing a fan at them.

I have a newer Giga h61 mobo..that will do the same thing if I don't point a fan at the VRMs.

Start > Type "Event Viewer" > Windows Logs > System > Sort by Level > Check for critical and error logs, see if you can see any that relates to the times the computer reboots.

There's been an update...........

I clicked on shutdown in windows 7, and my computer started the shut down process, but it didn't shutdown, the monitor went to sleep so I waited a while...., it didn't shutdown, so I tried holding down the power button for 4 seconds, that didn't work so I had to turn off the computer using the on/off switch on the power supply itself.

Once the computer was off I could smell something burning. I had a look at the motherboard but couldn't see any blown capacitors.

What shall I do next?

that sounds like something is cooking to death. if it were me id use my nose to find the origin of the burning smell. get a flashlight and look very closely at the power delivery portion of the motherboard (right beside the processor socket) then check the power supply to see if it smells like burning.

I was going to say check windows update. I had the same problem but I discovered windows update was causing it about 5 minutes ago tongue.gif

But it sounds like you have a more serious problem. Check all the power connections, and if you can't find anything and the motherboard looks fine start looking for shorts. Look for cables that are bending in a weird way or have strain on them, and then I'd check all around and underneath the motherboard to make sure it isn't shorting with the case or anything like that.

OK.

I also have a power supply in a working computer to test to see if it's the power supply at fault.

I'll do a basic setup, 1 stick of ram, cpu and video card.

while i totally agree isolating the components to the bare minimum. I would use a magnifying glass and inspect both sides of the mobo
if the power supply doesnt have that smell to determine the source before you 'fire" it up.
just my 2 cents..

seasonic makes good power supplies. but any component can fail.
if it wasnt for the smoke smell Buzzin92 had a great idea if it was os related. and Schmuckley knows hardware. :>

Yep I had a look over the motherboard with a magnifying glass and didn't find anything wrong with it.

Right so I tried turning the machine back on. It wouldn't post, it also wouldn't power off after holding the power switch in for 4 seconds. So I tried a different power supply from a working machine. It did the same thing (wouldn't power off after holding the power switch in for 4 seconds)

Luckly I had a spare Am2 motherboard lying around which I used to test all the parts again, it posted fine.

So in conclusion the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H is toast. frown.gif

Well, it looks like it, you did a thorough diagnosis. not sure if you have already tested the following.

Have you tried clearing the bios?

does it beep at all? do you have a motherboard speaker?

any Leds on the board that could indicate something?
My board have lots of Leds to see the POST in action. stuck at cpu ram gpu ect.
