[DO]Ouya to release new model every year - Page 4

I wonder how much they intend to charge for the updates thinking.gif If they are smart they will sell drop in replacements cards for the cheap so that you can upgrade your existing Ouya.

A one year cycle? On PC we get new hardware at random intervals with dozens of models across multiple architectures, and the current smartphone market seems like a complete mess even compared to that.

They will have no problem adapting to "one" new piece of hardware every year.

Yeah but most mobile games don't make any where near full usage of the available hardware and with PC games you your self do a crude type of optimization when you dial in the settings.

The hole point of consoles is fixed hardware and with a 1 year cycle much of that point is lost.

They are using Tegra 3 so all Tegra 3 games will work, Next Gen will have Tegra 4. I wonder if you would only buy the Box next time you get the second generation for cheaper?

The one thing I hope will happen with the OUYA console is that it can be compatible with Nvidia SHIELD and the streaming H.264 from a Geforce PC. From what I understand, the Shield (Tegra 4) just takes the encoded H.264 content from a Geforce card and decodes it to display on the handheld. The Tegra 3 in the OUYA has the same capability as far as H.264 encode/decoe goes. At least that's what I have been able to find so far. Maybe there is a different limitation to where you would NEED a Tegra 4 chip, but who knows what all those Devs will come up with wink.gif All I know is that it would be great to have an OUYA hooked up to my TV and able to play all my PC games!

That would be amazing. What will kill Console Market. I know a lot of us here have PS3/360. Now we dont need to have the next gen Console at all.

No offense, but stating that Ouya will even put a dent in the console market is laughable at best. Android games suck. At best you'll get games like FTL or Mark of the ninja which are laughable graphics wise, you won't get something like crysis 3 on Ouya. It is telling that nvidia does not showcase their shield product with android games, and instead will only showcase it with streaming PC games (which again, requires a PC in a 100 yard radius in the same house)....why is that? Oh yeah, android games aren't worth showing.

Sure, you can stream from your PC but you still won't get console AAA games and you still can play from your PC directly. It also requires your PC to have a GTX 660+ GPU. Pointless? Yes. Why the heck would I want to stream in the same house if I could just play from PC. The streaming also requires a GTX 660+.

Ouya will have it's place as a possible netflix or media server box, but anyone stating that 720 or PS4 should be worried? Please. Tegra 3 doesn't even approach the power of xbox 360 or PS3.

With at least the next xbox requiring persistent online connections and no used games I think they are going to have huge competition from things like Gamestick, OUYA, Nvidia Shield, Steambox, etc.

It will be a GLORIOUS time for gamers!

This. People seem to only be focused on the gaming portion when this will actually be completely open where you can load all your own software, install Linux, or do whatever else you can think of with no problem.

This is why I'm getting one. Most people here couldn't build an HTPC for $99 that is as compact as the OUYA. By the time you get a raspberry pi, a case, card, power adapter, remote, you'd easily spend more than $99 ( I know, I've done it smile.gif ), and pretty much the same for most other dev boards like the pi.

True, I guess the streaming is a neat feature if you have an existing powerhouse PC. So you are correct in that sense; I'm thinking more along the lines of the buyers who will only buy once device - those buyers will definitely get PS4 or Xbox 720.

I am interested in Ouya mainly for the non gaming related stuff, I guess the streaming would be a nice bonus if I really wanted to be lazy on the couch.
