Good with the AMD FX 8350?

Thread Starter
I'm planning on doing a little upgrading to my computer as I have a bit of extra cash laying around. The good people on these forums have convinced my that purchasing an SSD is well worth the money so I will go ahead and purchase an SSD for sure. But, I am also considering buying a new CPU and motherboard with hopes of overclocking in mind...
For some reason I am really looking at the AMD FX 8350 CPU as I would like to stick with an AMD processor, and I notice it comes out of the box at 4.0GHz which is very nice. What are your thoughts on the CPU? Also I have noticed some listing for the chip that say 4.0(4.2 Turbo) what exactly is the whole 4.2 turbo about...
If I decided on this chip (AMD FX 8350) I would absolutely like to do some over clocking and that is why I think I will be needing a new motherboard as well, a motherboard that will allow for easy over clocking (for instance the mobo I have now...people are saying it doesn't have "direct vrm cooling" etc.

So to break this down, I am thinking of purchasing a new CPU/Motherboard that will allow for easy upgrading..what are your thoughts on the 8350 and what would you recommend as a CPU/mobo combination?
Also, would you recommend buying the CM Hyper 212 for this processor as I'd like to do some OC'ing or something else? Stock?

Thanks so much!

Current Setup is below:
Ram: g.Skill Ripjaws 8gb
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2
Motherboard: ASUS M4A87TD/USB3
Power: 600W OCZ
Case: MidTower
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 460

Ok what is you budget?
What is the pc going to be used for?
What shops are you open to using?

I recommend a Fx8350 paired with a HD7770 or a 7850, but I cant say more without knowing the above

OP shouldn't go from a 460 to a 7770, that's not really an upgrade at all.

What is your budget, can't tell you much without that smile.gif

I have been itching myself to give FX-8350 or FX-8320 a try. I understand all the intel better for gaming mumbo jumbo - but the games I play, most of it will rely on GPU anyway. My only concern is the power consumption when you overclock one of these boys. I really do want to switch out my PSU at this time. I guess leaving it stock will be just fine considering it is 4.0GHz (Turbo 4.2). Turbo means that it will overclock itself to 4.2 when there is demand. I would think CM Hyper 212 should allow for a decent overclock. Someone else will have to recommend a motherboard, but my understanding is get a 990FX one. I think if you plan to overclock, your achilles heel will be your PSU - I am afrain 600W might not cut it. Need to check some reviews out.

A 4.8GHz 8350 uses about 320w, but realiosticly the best you will be looking at with a 212 is 4.65, since it sucks a lot of power after that.

a 600w PSU might be enough but it depends on the GFX card, the 7850 only uses 150 watt at max when Oced

A Hyper 212 Plus/EVO can more than get the job done with one of these.

I switched from a Thuban to an 8350 about a week ago. It's pretty quick out of the box, like you'd expect from a 4 GHz stock CPU. You overclock it because you can, not because you really need to. As far as a good overclocking motherboard goes, just about any 990FX board out there is going to do the job fine, as will any of the 970 boards with proven good VRM setups (Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3, ASUS M5A97 EVO, Biostar TA970XE; I've had the Biostar and the Gigabyte and both are great.).

If you overclock an 8350 past about 4.5 and put in a high-end GPU, make sure you have a beefy power supply. FX processors at very high clocks still suck down a lot of juice.

Personally id recommend using a Gelid Tranquillo Rev 2 cpu cooler with the FX8350 if you can get one near you or online. I have used one with mine before i switched to H100 and it handled overclock temps upto 4.7Ghz. The cooler itself is easy as pie to install, cost effective, and near enough totally silent running with very good cooling to boot.

As for which motherboard id recommend the Sabertooth 990FX if it is within your budget, but then i am a little bias rolleyes.gif

If your psu is less than 3 years old and at least Bronze 80Plus certified you may be ok, but you can always check here > http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp
This will give you a rough idea ( and i mean a vague idea ) of how much power your gonna be using and if you need to upgrade psu or not.

As for overclocking, there is the Piledriver/Bulldozer thread right here on OCN that has many experienced guys who are willing to help you if you need it !

Avoid the 4+1 Power Phases on lower end 970boards, they can sometimes overclock high but may suffer from more vDroop and power spikes. Look for 6+2 or 8+2 or better for good overclocks

Here is my two cents on the Cooler Master 212 EVO after having owned one. MY first heatsink was stock, my second was a 92mm XIgmatek, my third one was a Hyper 212 EVO with cougar push-pull fans.

With each of these coolers I kept wanting more. It seems that everyone here on OCN recommends the 212. It is a decent cooler, but it really isn't a highend cooler. It is an adequate aftermarket cooler for some average overclocks. Its nothing to write home about. Dont get me wrong, it is a solid and quality product, but it just doesnt have what it takes to really get a high OC. Mine had custom push-pull fans, a shroud, and a custom polished base. I struggled to get to 4.0mhz on it with my FX8120. Temps very quickly jumped to 65+. If you want to just do some small to medium OC then you will be fine with it. But if you will want to push it further then you will be sunk. Some people get lucky and can do it. With a chip that runs cool etc. But with a BD or PD. You will be pretty limited on how high the 212 can take you. I finally gave up and went with the silver arrow. It kicks trash. 4.5 OC on FX8350 maxed out at 51*C in Prime 95, but hovered in the high 40's. Can't beat that with closed water loops.

Please do what you feel is best. But this is coming from a guy who decided to take everyone"s word for it on the 212. And I regretted it. What I am saying is just do your homework. You may even decide on the 212 after all, and thats cool, just consider all options and what your future needs of OCing will bring. And if you decide you want the 212, I am selling a nice one! thumb.gif Good luck brother.
