AMD FX-6300 Overclocking

ASRock 970DE3/U3S3 AM3+ AMD 770 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157305&Tpk=970DE3%2fU3S3

I got it to 6 hour stable in prime95 on 1.4725 volts, 4500mhz, and 59C max temperature.
(Stopped prime95 because I was impatient.)

I had the volts at 1.5125, 4600mhz and 60-65c but prime95 just kept on failing on core 6 after about 10 minutes.
Some sort of math/interger error.....
I can't remember the exact wording.
(It only uses about 1.45volts at load. And I don't see any options to tinker with LLC on this motherboard.)

Are there any special tricks to this architecture like also overvolting NB or CPU-NB or overclocking/downclocking those parts or some other parts to make it stable?
The heat wasn't really that bad yet but it just keeps asking for more volts....
Something doesn't seem right about that.
I thought this CPU could go to 71C?

You may have hit the max frequency that that chip will do. The maximum safe temperature for the CPU cores is 62C and 70C for the socket temp. As far as I know there isn't much else you can do. The best way for overclocking the FX CPUs is to just use the CPU multiplier and CPU voltage.

What LLC options do you have? It seems to play a major role in achieving a stable overclock with the FX processors. I had to set mine to Ultra High to maintain stability on my 8350.

The TJ Max for AMD Vishera is 70*C, after that the CPU shuts cores off to try to lower temps and not damage itself. If you stay under 64*C then your OK. Can you post some screenshots of you BIOS pages that relate to overclocking please? What cooler have you got?

Thjat board is known for throttling VRM's. Slap a 80mm fan over the VRM area and set to full speed ahead! biggrin.gif

Seriously though it was the board I had before this one. Its the VRM issue. Also, prime is not the best stable test for FX CPU's

He's right about Prime95. It is not reliable for stress testing the FX processors. Use something like OCCT instead.

I don't think there are any LLC options...which would be helpful as it goes from 1.52v to 1.44v on full load.
What do you use for temps?
I'm trying to use HWmonitor and Speedfan but the readings are wonky for several values.

Is that necessary with the case I have (XCLIO 320)?

two 120mm in the front intake
two 140mm on the side intake
two 140mm on the top exhaust
one 120mm on the rear exhaust
one 120mm on the bottom intake

And the PSU intakes from the bottom and exhausts out the rear.

Hmmm....okay I can try OCCT instead.
Any particular reason why prime95 is bad for the FX chips?

I did make sure to download and install all the latest drivers for the MOBO from the asrock website and update to the latest BIOS (1.6) when I first got the board/installed windows.

P95 was designed and tested mainly with an Intel motherboard/CPU. It doesnt stress as much since they are comepletely different architectures

youll find they patched in bulldozer last year.

As for vishera they don't seem to be wanting to patch anyting in for it.

Some peopledo indeed have problems wilst others seem to be alright with prime

Thread Starter
6th and sometimes 5th cores have an integer error in prime95 for me.
It's not the normal hard CPU core error, program crash, or windows crash I'm used to getting from prime95.

I've not had a program or windows crash from prime95 with the FX-6300.
I may have had a core error.

I'll try OCCT over the weekend though.
I've been tightening my RAM timings this week and need to see how stable those are as well.

Can I suggest you do one bit at a time when it comes to overclocking, overclock 1 thing (Rememeber the settings. Reset BIOS, overclock the other thing then restore the other settings and then stress test

Something ;like this will save you ages of debugging etc
