I've been a big fan (no pun intended) of Silverstone's AP181 series.

Several. I was thinking along the lines of either the SilverStone SST-AP181 or the Phobya G-Silent 18's.

SilverStone Technical details:

Dimensions: 180 x 180 x 32mm
Colors: Black frame and blades
Rated Voltage: 12V
Start Voltage: 10.8 Volts
Power consumption: 0.45A
Rated speed: 700rpm; 1200rpm
Airflow: 80-130 CFM
Static Pressure: Max 1.1-2.45mmH20
Noise level: 18 / 34 dB / A

Phobya Technical details:

Dimensions: 180 x 180 x 25mm
Colors: Black frame and blades
Weight: 215g
Rated Voltage: 12V
Start Voltage: 7 Volts
Power consumption: 0.13A
Rated speed: 700rpm (+ / -10%)
Airflow: 95 m³ / h / 56 CFM
Noise level: 17 dB / A
Connector: 3 Pin Molex
Feature: Very narrow, 25mm

The SilverStone looks like it could be a beast!

It is wild how it seems to forced the air out more in a column than a traditional fan, which would be good, I think, for use on a radiator.

From one review: "Functionally, the fan exceeds SilverStone's claim of providing the high speed performance of the FT02 fans while running at low speed. In all but one of my tests, the AP181 Air Penetrator fans provided better performance at low speeds than the stock FT02 fans on high."

Yes and no, the Silverstone AP181 is quiet at 5v but doesn't push much but I have seen people say they die within a year or two. I think the only other manufacturer is Phobya and i don't know how they preform. The problem is that of the 180mm fans they all seem to be sleeve bearing fans.

Silverstone 180mm High Performance FM181

65~150 CFM at 17dBA @ 500rpm and 36 dBA @ 1300rpm.

The Phobya'a are ok, I have 3 on my Magicool 3x 180(540)......but at the end of the day they only push 56 CFM....but since the sheer amount of rad space for the 3x 180 you don't really need super fans for good performance...and I am guessing that most of the rads of that size would only be in the range of 9-13 FPI..

But the quality isn't there with the phobya's, I have broken 2 just by my shirt hitting the fan blade while switched on. But at only running at 700 RPM you can get away with super gluing the blade back on.. But in general their slim fans feel cheap and are cheap....I am also sure that they are only made of hardened styrene and not the normal plastic fiberglass mix.....they are only $17 for a reason....

Could that be overcome by sandwiching the radiator with a push-pull fan config?

What would the point be?

May as well run them a little faster, not pay 2x the price for maybe 5%-10% increase when you can just turn a dial and get that performance gain anyway .

Noise.

3 fans at 34dBA each running full speed 1200RPM is 38.771dB total. 6 fans at 18dBA each running at slow speed 700RPM is only 25.78dB total.
