I know you're looking for mobility and size, so why not add the ability to go a little toward the gaming area too? thumb.gif
While I do appreciate the advice, I'm going for this machine because of it's quality and design. I just fell in love with it's aesthetics from the moment I saw it. It's going to be a work machine, primarily. I think I've decided on the 14" version without the NVidia GPU (I found where I can get a REAL good deal on one with Intel HD only, and is new). So I'll be purchasing that soon. Probably tomorrow, once the banks are open.

I leave the gaming for spare time and at home. I've got a new build I'm putting together, and attempting to game on a laptop in comparison to the desktop I'll be making... Well, it'd be a laughable experience. ;]

If Dell ever releases the same model of the 14" (L421x) with a 1920x1080 screen, I might try and send it in to Dell for a screen upgrade, if possible. If not, 1600x900 won't bother me at all.

If its primarily work.
Go with something that is highly mobile, has a comfortable keyboard and a good screen on the eyes. The keyboard alone can go a long way, longer then the specs it packs. Find something that can be comfortable over long periods of time if you'll be using the laptop heavily.

There is something about carrying a light highly responsive laptop and light power adapter being able to easily transport too.

More and more computer stores have the Zenbook on display. Best Buy has usually 2 for example. Good place to try it out, then price match it online with them or just buy online if you like it.

Edit: Zenbook's top out at 4GB still I think if you go with the thin ones. The "medium" sized ones (that packs a 620M GT and a standard HDD + cache but same 1080p screen and almost as thin) they can support upto 6 or 8GB which may be better if you plan on dual booting and running Lunix in a virtual machine.

I saw the Zenbook today, and wasn't all that impressed on it.

I've heard a lot of people don't like the Dell XPS 14 display, but (don't have source) someone said that it's a lot in-part due to the bundled/included "TrueLife" display software, and with that off, the screen was more accurate and much, much better. The screen on the 14" is an IPS, still.

I read that one of the best features is the laptops keyboard. And though it's heavy, it's got some killer battery life. Over seven hours in most stress-tests.

So I ordered my XPS last night. It cost me $1,000, + $19.99 for shipping. Should be here Monday. I'll do a review of it then. Here's how mine is configured and should be coming:

14" IPS Gorilla Glass display, 1600 x 900
Intel i5 3317U
8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600
Intel HD 4000
256GB SSD (I believe one of the Crucial M4 SSD's)
Windows 7 64-bit Home
Also comes with MS Office 13 Professional, full edition which is nice and some other good software.

What really tripped me over, was the display (I'd seen the XPS 14 in stores, as well as others) and the battery life. I'll be using Ubuntu with it mostly. Ubuntu has lower battery life than Windows, so, if the laptop can get seven hours in load testing, it should be very good for battery life with Linux. This is also why I opted out of the Nvidia GT 630m graphics, as hybrid graphics never really work quite right under Linux. I believe my model also has a SIM card slot, so I can get a data plan for it, which will be great.

Well, the laptop came in today.

It was advertised by the seller as "new".

Sadly, it had some markings along the hinge, came in the type of box a refurbished/RMA laptop would ship in through a company, and also had over 2,500 hours time used on the SSD. So, clearly, the product is not new. I'm getting a refund on it.

On the bright side, I might just get a Chromebook Pixel and install Linux on it. That resolution. If not, I'll probably just get another XPS through Dell.
