[Build Log] Big Brother (Water Cooled Powermac G4) (update April 28th with watercooled PSU) - Page 4

Update time again smile.gif

Yesterday I fiiinally received the stuff from the laser hive, so I couldn't help but to do some more work.
First, the original standoffs were removed as they were in the way
New standoffs were placed
Fitting a test motherboard - too bad I forgot the IO shield, but gives a good impression. Fits perfecty it seems.

And like always, I came up with a new idea.. If I want to do a clean front, I might as well do a clean top as well if wanting to give it the clean look. This gave me the idea to use another pump and reservoir since the XSPC pump + bay reservoir would no longer be visible.

With the radiator in the top, this would result in lack of room for the original PSU placement. I could move the PSU as was done in the Macbane build and placing it next to the motherboard. By moving the radiator to the front, this would solve the PSU problem. I would have to use another pump and reservoir, but I have loads of those laying around.

If I move the radiator all the way to one side, I am able to fit a giant reservoir and mount it to the door that comes down with the motherboard

I could also go with another couple of pump+reservoir solutions as I have a couple more

The pump on the right is the one I would use with the big res.

Another consequence of moving the radiator would mean crappy airflow... But then again, this case always had crappy airflow biggrin.gif

Subbed. Looks good so far! I'm still waiting for my Laser Hive order to get here. Hopefully I'll get it next week.

Update time!

The final placement and choice of reservoir and pump is now done smile.gif Fitting of the open/close mechanism is also done with a little cutting.

I initially wanted to mount the reservoir to the same panel as the motherboard. This turned out to be impossible as I would have to destroy the open/close mechanism and there simply wouldnt be room to close the casing.

Instead, the final design would work if I moved the radiator all the way to the left side and then mounted the reservoir to the front side of the casing. Just leaving a couple of mm's. I testfitted with a micro-atx and one of my watercooled cards and there were no problems at all.

The only 2 concerns I have left:

1. How do I make an open/close mechanism for the water cooling parts on the motherboard?
2. Where the hell did I put all the original screws for the casing?! Can't finish it without those!! thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

All on your own, you've done what Apple has failed to do for their entire company's lifespan:
Make a Mac that I actually want to buy.

Update time!

Test fitted the PSU and tourned out that even though the screw mounts were in the standard placements, the rest was not, so had to cut that bit.

The final design of the front is done and fitted. Doesn't leave any room for anything else, but will fit with the motherboard + 2 watercooled GPUs, så happy day!

And then a bit more work on the front panel. It is now glued and filled and awaiting another layer of filler.

Nice!

Have you had a chance to test to see how the door closes now that you have the laser hive rear IO panel on there? Mine doesn't close very well, but I think I may have slightly bent the door at some point while doing my mod.
