Boom! Let the
begin! lolPfft. WoW is like cotton candy when what I really want is a steak. It tastes great for all of 5 seconds, then it's gone. I prefer something I can sink my teeth into. To each their own, I suppose.
Rift is worth checking out. It's *very* much like WoW from a user interface and game mechanics standpoint, but it puts WoW to shame visually (really, it's not even close) and things like battling to close spontaneous planar rifts provides a more dynamic experience. It's also F2P now.
I still go back to EQ every now and again. One of things that made it great (requiring large raid forces often with specific class requirements) also just happens to be what largely caused it to wither on the vine, as the player base dwindled over the years. They've done a lot to alleviate that these days, and it's very playable again. The graphics are pretty dated, but they have still done class design/identity way better than anyone else, IMO. It's also F2P these days.
Guild Wars 2 also looks like it has some potential. I've not put in enough time with it yet to have a good feel for it, though. F2P as well.
Now, if you're a real masochist and want a sci-fi MMORPG with a lot of depth (read: learning curve) and a dynamic, player-driven world, then EVE Online is the game for you.
Hope you find something that appeals to you.
EDIT: Hey, smex, is your avatar a picture of CPU waterblock or an illustration out of a biology textbook?
