Nvidia is shifting towards modularizing everything (cloud/maximus/etc), AMD is towards HSA (making everything unified) rolleyes.gif
That maximus stuff looks really cool, kinda like hybrid sli or something.
Interesting how nvidia and amd are heading towards different things, maybe amd is going for unifying because they also make CPUs (well design them)

This translates to a raw ALU performance advantage for AMD:

AMD Radeon HD 6990: 3072 ALUs x 830 MHz = 2550 billion 32-bit instruction per second
Nvidia GTX 590: 1024 ALUs x 1214 MHz = 1243 billion 32-bit instruction per second

This approximate 2x-3x performance difference exists across the entire range of AMD and Nvidia GPUs. It is very visible in all ALU-bound GPGPU workloads such as Bitcoin, password bruteforcers, etc.

Secondly, another difference favoring Bitcoin mining on AMD GPUs instead of Nvidia's is that the mining algorithm is based on SHA-256, which makes heavy use of the 32-bit integer right rotate operation. This operation can be implemented as a single hardware instruction on AMD GPUs (BIT_ALIGN_INT), but requires three separate hardware instructions to be emulated on Nvidia GPUs (2 shifts + 1 add). This alone gives AMD another 1.7x performance advantage (~1900 instructions instead of ~3250 to execute the SHA-256 compression function).

Combined together, these 2 factors make AMD GPUs overall 3x-5x faster when mining Bitcoins.

For gaming however, Nivida and AMD trade blows, depending on how the game was coded, except for very high resolution/AA/AF (AMD GPUs tend to have bigger memory bandwidth than Nivida's).

A 5870 is about on par (if not better) with my 670. I don't know for sure the clock speeds of my 670 because NVIDIA dropped the ball on their linux drivers... weak

^This is why AMD mines better than nVidia. It does not say anything about general compute performance using advanced instruction sets though which is what code probably meant.

nVidia drivers are really good in Linux (X sucks though). Perhaps Kepler being new is the problem. AMD is a horror in Linux though...

Ever since FERMI, NVIDIA has failed to support overclocking. Clock rates don't even display accurately.

AMD a horror in linux? NO. There are sometimes a few tweaks to configure, but nothing horrible. Sounds like your personal experience was horrible.

The only overclocking method was CoolBits AFAIK, never knew you could do such a thing with X my 9800GTX also can't OC though. Fermi support and CUDA works good and has much better support in Wine than I have with AMD 4890 and 5850. I'm not the only one who had bad experiences with Intel and AMD graphics drivers in Ubuntu btw. Random freezes, crashes and sometimes even a pain to install. Far smoother experience with nVidia.
