[ZDNET] Surface Pro versus MacBook Air: Who's being dishonest with storage space? - Page 5

Phones/tablets with minimal storage still get labeled with their storage spec, ie Iphone 5 - 32 GB. So when a chunk of the space is gone (from a full OS) it's much more noticeable. iOS and Android don't eat up much space at all on their tablets so they didn't face that scrutiny. It hurts the MSoft "Surface" brand that part of the label attached with the brand is a farce to the end consumer.

Laptops and Desktops don't get their storage capacity associated with the brand name. When was the last time you saw a laptop or desktop get marketed that way? If I wanted to sell my rig on OCN I surely wouldn't label it as "Custom Built Gaming PC - 1Terabyte". When people talk Macbooks, I don't really hear them referred to as Macbook Pro 500GB.

This is actually correct in some ways, a lot of perception is built around form factor alone and not around the capability of the device. I think the lines between ultrabook and tablets will close this year, as Haswell will allow intel to put powerful Haswell chips into a tablet form factor without sacrificing battery life.

MS should definitely tout the superior capabilities of the surface pro compared to underpowered ARM devices, but they haven't as much as they should have. Basically, MS has not marketed it properly.

For now, there are many in the mainstream media who view a surface pro and say "hurr durr tablet hurr durr" while completely ignoring that you can do virtually anything on it in terms of x86 computing. This is definitely NOT the case with underpowered ARM devices -- don't get me wrong, I think the ipad is fantastic; in the end though, there are a lot of things you cannot do on an ipad which you CAN do on a full PC. MS should better explain that difference to the mainstream media - who are judging devices based on form factor alone.

Storage isn't an issue nowadays, not to me.

You want 45 movies on your tablet? Prioritize your storage......stop acting like a princess

the form factor of the Surface PRO and it's innards are amazing. The reason battery life isn't better is quite simple..........batteries that provide that much power at that size DON'T exist. at least nothing at a consumer level. You can't complain about technology that doesn't yet exist -_-

The battery life compliant have always been about how it could be made better in the future through CPU improvement, I don't see people accusing MS of going cheap on batteries.

that wasn't really to you. I was having a hard time tracking the focus of the (civil) arguments going on.

I'm just stating to people in general, not you. (i'm at work right now so I'm kinda just refreshing this page between tasks)

PS: after rereading your post and what I replied, I think the first half must've been to you, or just adding on to what you were saying

The second half (the princess comment) was just my rant to the situation lol

I think we all agree that surface pro has potential, I do feel like MS could improve the keyboard interface aspect - although the keyboard typecover is optional.

I see this as a start to a bunch of new x86 portable devices - this is not a trend, this is where PC computing is headed folks. There are a lot of interesting hybrid tablet/ultrabook designs, one of my favorite being the thinkpad helix. These types of devices will just expand in number of the coming year, and i'm particularly excited for the Haswell models. Haswell should allow a surface pro type of device to have 9-14 hours of battery life. That excites me.

As far as storage goes, it is what it is. Anyone who has used a PC for any length of time will realize that the OS uses significant storage space, surface pro is no different. I really think this has been blown out of proportion: with the ease of cloud strorage, cloud music streaming, and cloud video streaming - you can surely find a storage size that works for you. And if not - just hook a USB stick or external HD.

Understood. I think we both agree that Surface Pro is a great pioneering device, I am just of the opinion that there is substantial room for improvement thus sometime I came off as negative toward the current Surface Pro.

agreed.
I actually have a Surface RT next to me at work right now. We don't have wireless at our office, but I can easily transfer files that I do from my RT using a USB drive. Now, the RT is the deprived of the two, but to me, it can still do a lot more work related tasks than any other device. I can get a long with the functionality with just an RT but with the obvious limitations of ARM. The Surface PRO paves a new path of what's possible for mobile computing. I'm not going to get a PRO just because I have a 64 GB RT, but the functionality is pretty incredible for a such a small device. Other tablets just can't compare to it...and their extended battery life is irrelevant when you take into account their limited processing ability.

Adding an extra 3 milometers to the chassis of an RT, and adding x86 functionality, 4 gigs of DDR3 RAM and a REAL SSD, that's a serious upgrade. Let's not forget, this thing reads/writes at like 400/200 megabytes. Compared to 30MB/s for pretty much anything else

who cares, no one will even fill 50% of the HD on a tablet anyway, unless you load it with 100's of movies.

I beg to disagree...

This is a full 64b OS device... Not just a media consumption device running a mobile OS.

Visual Studio 2012 + Libraries alone.... Someone correct me here ,but that is pushing 20 GB, if not more, just to code.

Throw in all of my personal files, maybe some media, work related stuff, school related stuff...

128 GB goes fast on a full OS device. Its not a 128 GB iPad.

this is a computer, not a conventional tablet.

Heres the thing though, the macbook air is a laptop, so everyone expects there to be some space already used by the system. Most people see the surface pro as a tablet, and for a tablet to only have 75% usable storage is absurd.
