Stupid Question(s)

As stated, this is probably a stupid question. Call me retarded, call me insane, call me what you will... If you notice my rig, you will see that I've got this nifty 8800GT. Pretty sure its the xfx model. Has the heatsink and housing covering the entire card, not just the gpu, or gpu and memory, but the caps and FETs also. I was idling at 135F (57C), and hitting almost max @ 100C. Chip max as per spec = 221F (105C). Needless to say, cleanout time. I discovered that there was a "blanket" of dust between the fan blades and the sink holes, completely blocking air flow. Yarrrrgghhhhh, I say. Reapply thermal compound, slather it all over the FETs and caps for good contact (cuz theres holes in the sink housing where some FETs are, like only half of a couple are covered).

Good news is idle temps down to 48C, load temps never seem to break 87C. And I finally have gotten my HDDs under 100F. Making your house about 65 degrees helps this...ha. This using FurMark under highest res and highest AA settings. Now enters the stupid question. Is there A) a better sink and/or fan for the 8800gt in particular? or B) is it possible to get this thing under 38C (at idle of course) on air alone?

Further background on the case and various bits. Its a ATX case from like 2000. 1 60mm fan blowing over HDD in front, 1 80mm fan behind front cover drawing air from underneath blowing onto NB and PCI cards, 1 120mm (really thick, fast, powerful one) intake near front on side blowing air directly onto NB and into 8800 Intake, 2 120mm (normal) on upper side pulling heat from dvd drives and cpu, 1 26mm NB fan on rear of case bhind 8800 for better heat exhaust from card, 2 80mm fans on cpu hs, and of course the psu fan 80mm exhaust.

There are very few dead air spots inside, although I'm pretty sure theres a few turbulent areas, particularly above the video card, under the cpu; just below the dvd drives, and around the sound card. For the most part, however the air moves from the front to the back, and more from bottom to top. Only thing I can do to the case to increase air flow and pattern would be to add a 120mm fan to the top, and maybe a fan inside the psu to draw heat from cpu for exhaust.

Def cool. I wonder, does the GTS sink mount up on the GT board? what is the difference between the 2 pcb-wise? I probably could find a GTS sink for sale. They've been around a couple years, should be some spare parts cards out there. rep tho. 2 hours of searching never brought up that one. Jus the generic stuff one usually finds and a couple mo-rons.. lol

My teachers always told me there is no such thing as a stupid question. teaching.gif

I would try that ghetto rigging thing personally. Seems pretty promising.

I think you will find that you are hard pressed to find a cooler for such an old card.

I was going to recommend trying the Artic Accelero, but it looks like your card is not supported. sadsmiley.gif

If it was me, I would look into getting a new video card. Would probably get more bang for your buck that way!

Well, ya know, i would think about that......ifn I had more than -1000 bux in the bank. HA I'm wading in ankle deep debt right now. Just moved, bought a car, fixing a bike, fixing another car, preparing to fix a truck.....lol such is life, I guess. But really, I actually kinda love this card. I have 2, the xfx (I think) and a PNY. The sink on the pny is smaller, so ima use it for experiments (volt mod and such, with a spare machine) I got both of them for free. I go dumpster diving and root through the trash at my local computer repair places. lol But its gotten me sum pretty good things. I currently am using a AOC 22" HDMI monitor that I found. Spent less than 30 bux getting it working. I figure 10% retail isnt too bad a price.
