CPU Multiplier

Thread Starter
Hi I picked up an AMD duel core 270 3.4Gh processor a few weeks back and have been playing around with overclocking it. I got it up to 4Gh with an Arctic Freezer pro13 air cooler was running stable no issues with overheating BSOD freezing etc.

Strange thing is I checked the CPU speed yesterday to discover that the processor multiplier which is normally X17 is now jumping between X4 X10 and X17 meaning one minute I'm getting 3.6Gh because I dropped it down to 216 with multiplier X17 to 864.06Mhz the question is has the processor gone faulty or is it normal for the multiplier to do this????

I don't think so but I'm new and me knows nothing:o

Cheers Bill

This throttling occurs to save power. If you load all cores to 100% and it still does it, then there may be cause for concern.

As it is at idle, it only comes out of power saving when it needs the speed.

if cool 'n' quiet is enabled your cpu multiplier will drop when not busy. most overclockers disable this setting to set a constant frequency.

Ok cool and quiet was enabled now disabled and on running prime95 multiplier speed sits at X17 increased cpu frequency to 225 @ X17 holding steady at 3825.00Mhz

system temp
Cpu 33C Fan speed 1386rpm
MB 23C Chassis Fan speed 1110rpm

All seems comfortable at 3825.00Mhz

Question is as it idles at a lower speed anyway is it worth leaving it at 3825 or even 4165.00Mhz which I know it runs at with a CPU temp of around 39 - 40C

What do you guys recon???

Bill

There's nothing wrong with leaving it enabled if it's not causing problems. my i7 runs at 4GHz when under load, and IIRC 1.8GHz when idle. I can't tell the difference when I'm not doing anything...

Thanks I had it at 4236.00 first time I OCd it but the temp got higher than I wanted so droped it I currently got it up to 3995.9Mhz at the moment but i'm not sure about changing the CPU voltage which is currently at 1.425V and cpu temp at 37C

Cheers Bill

You can also run K10stat (if it is compatible with your CPU) to change the multi like CoolnQuiet does, except its much more flexible. I have my CPU set so it runs at 700Mhz when idling, then jumps up to 1.2Ghz, 2.4Ghz or 3.4Ghz depending on the CPU load (%age). No point running at full speed when you don't need it.

Do a search for k10stat for more info, or I can walk you through it if you want.
