Need Help Overclocking Intel Q6600 help appreciated!

Hello! I'm trying to get the most out of my PC since I cannot afford to upgrade or get a new computer for the time being. I don't expect being able to play on ultra graphics on Skyrim or 30+ fps on BF3 but I just like to play with minimal stuttering and fps drops, but from OCing my video card I'm now able to play games I couldn't like dead space 2 AND 3, MMO's, Borderlands 1 And 2, Dishonored and a few others. I'm hoping maybe OCing my CPU a little will help, I'm not looking for anything extreme but maybe it'll help some games that are more CPU based.

These are my specs:

IPIBL-LA (Berkeley) Motherboard

Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz

3GB DDR2 Ram

Nvidia 8400GS 1GB DDR3
Overclocked with EVGA Precision X (also looking to OC more:p)
From: GPU 520/ Memory 600/ Shader 1238 MHz
To: GPU 700/ Memory 600/ Shader 1671 MHz

300W PSU axesmiley.png

I don't know ANYTHING about OCing CPU's so I don't want to go off some weird youtube video and mess up my computer because the specs were different; Also if there is any other specs/ other you need to know I will post them as well.thumb.gif

I'm not familiar with your board...but I'm sure someone here is bound to be able to help you. I can tell you this though. I had my old Q6600 overclocked to 3.0GHz and with 4GB of DDR2 and a GTX 560, I was able to play Battlefield 3 at low settings at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 while maintaining 45 - 60fps. So, if you can find a GTX 560 on the cheap...pick one up. It may cause a minor bottleneck...but I managed to maintain a 1.40 KDR in Battlefield 3 with that setup.

Also, you could try applying for a Newegg Preffered account. I did. They extended me a $2,000.00 line of credit. Of course I'm not insane...so I've never come close to maxing the account out. Also, they give you 12 months no interest on orders over $500.00. I'm not a big advocate of getting in debt...so dont do it unless your in a position to pay $80-$100 a month. I never pay the minimum on credit cards. If the minimum payment is $25.00, I send $75.00.

as for OC'ing, I'd say start off searching... I don't know your board at all. I haven't OC'ed 775 socket in a long time. Should be relatively simple as fasr as upping the FSB, tweaking the volts, and testing. 3GB though? So mix/matched? That certainly won't help the OC.

But like I said, I don't know your motherboard, but it doesn't sound fantastic so it might not even have the options needed to properly OC.

I have 2x 1gb and 2x 512mb 667 ddr3 cards, 4 slots, I would assume there would of been 4x 1gb but I only have Win7 32Bit. I wouldn't get to use the 1gb anyway right?

here is a link to the HP website with the mobo specs, I googled a little and it looks like the mobo is "locked" but you can OC using SetFSB? (I honestly dont know) xD

Truthfully your q6600 is going to give 100% maximum potential in games at its stock speeds, with it paired to your 8400GS card... The biggest way a overclock is going to help is if you are on the edge of bottlenecking your card, which in this case is far from it... You could actually upgrade to a 550Ti and not bottleneck it with the q6600...

Also, seeing as you are running an older system, an even bigger bottleneck is most likley your hard drive. So two cheaper options to upgrade would be a card, even a 6670, 550ti, 7770, or any of the lower power consumption cards, and or a better hard drive or SSD would give you better results then worrying about overclocking... Stock Intel processors have way more umph then many give them credit for...

This is true about the 8400GS but not so true about the 550Ti. There are two games that I know of that absolutely trash your CPU. Those games are Planetside 2 and Natural Selection 2. My 7850 (which is a magnitude faster than the 550 Ti) can easily cut through both of those games. Yet I still get terrible FPS in intense gameplay. A 550Ti should be able to keep up in both of those games with the graphics set to high. The Q6600 is a different story.

As long as you don't run Planetside 2 or Natural Selection 2 on a 550Ti there should be no bottleneck with the Q6600.

i looked at the 550TI but it needs a bigger PSU doesn't it?, Sadly upgrading isn't an option. thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif
Also I did a little testing on skyrim and I think I won't try to OC my CPU just because it never seems to go over 70% load when my GPU is at 97% xD
