Ultrabook dilemma

post #1 of 17
Thread Starter
Hello,

Starting September I will be going to university and I will need a new laptop. First of all, I want something very thin and ultra portable so I quickly moved my attention to ultrabooks. And so, I have considered quite a few and researched lots of ultrabooks and I have finally got to the one that would probably best match most of the things on my list. The ultrabook that I like very much is the Asus Zenbook.

Things I want:

- between 13.3 and 15.6 inches
- ultra slim and ultraportable with elegant design
- 256GB or more storage
- awesome display(at least hd resolution)
- good cpu
- enough ram
- good for coding and/or typing
- backlit keyboard

Now, the dilemma I have is that I do not know which one would be the better investment and it would best serve my needs. In university I will be studying computer science and I will use this ultrabook for everything school related.

The 2 models I like:
Code:
// ASUS Zenbook UX31A Prime
-------------------------//
// 1920x1080 FULLHD IPS Panel
// 4GB RAM
// 256GB SSD
// 6-7 HOURS BATTERY LIFE
// INTEL HD 4000 Graphics
// ULTRA SLIM

Code:
// ASUS Zenbook UX32VD Prime
------------------------//
// 1920x1080 FULLHD IPS Panel
// 4GB RAM
// 500GB Hard Drive
// 4-5 HOURS BATTERY LIFE
// Nvidia GeForce 620M Graphics
// FAIRLY SLIM

and so, which one do you think would best suit me?

also, if you have better ultrabooks that I might have missed or you think would better suit my needs please let me know

Neither
September is still a good ways away and enough time for new models and better ultrabooks to come out running with Haswell or improved APUs.

If i had to stick to one of those it would eb the second one.
Its expandable, the other one isnt.

The most common laptop upgrades are the RAM and addition of an SSD. Sometimes replacement of HDD with a bigger one. Rarely CPU upgrades occur, because Intel never uses the same socket for more than two generations of CPUs.
post #5 of 17
I'd go with the second one; with the Nvidia 620m in it.

They both have the same CPU in them, the only advantage I see to the first is the SSD. You can add an SSD later on yourself, if you like. Not the case with the GPU.

But I'd also second the opinion that you should wait until Haswell Ultrabooks come out this summer, if you're not in a hurry to get the laptop--you can get something much better before September.

And there's also the back-to-school sale summer season.
post #7 of 17
Yeah stuff will only get better and better.

The second ASUS has a available DIMM slot for more RAM (to 8GB) and the HDD is a normal 2.5" drive I believe and the SSD is msata (Not sure if separate or soldered on though).
The first ASUS you cannot upgrade anything and its limit is 4GB of ram. If you plan on using virtual machines that may not be enough.

4GB may not be enough about three to four years from now. I can easily hit 3.5 GB usage without a VM, Photoshop, or other software traditionally considered to be RAM loving.

i forgot to mention that my budget is about 1000-1100. My hope was that by the time i would start university prices on these ultrabooks would drop a little. Also, if new models are release i can only imagine that they would not be cheap.

so if i would get the one with the better graphics card. what would i have to do to upgrade the ram and add an ssd? would i have to do it myself or can i take it to a shop?

also more opinions = better decision

thanks a lot
