Trying to weigh size vs. price...any input here? (Upgrading from 64gb)

Thread Starter
Alrighty...so I've been price watching for several weeks now and here's the deal...I just can't bring myself to jump on the 840 non-Pro. If it weren't the first TLC drive out of the gate, then maybe...but even though I trust Samsung as much as anyone, I'm still gonna sit out this first TLC drive. It would be cheaper, yeah...but I'll just wait and see.

Next, I've decided to flirt with my imaginary $200 line. So the two drives highest on my list right now this very second are:

Corsair Neutron 256gb
Plextor M5P Xtreme 256gb

Both are the same price right now on newegg, so same price/gb. Both have 5 yr warranties. Both have a max write of 540 and max reads of 450/460.

Before I flip a coin, any compelling reason to go for one over the other?

Here is the original text of this post:

I have a Crucial M4 64gb that I am ready to upgrade. Technically I have 26gb free on it, but that is only because I installed 14gb worth of programs on a secondary drive. So between that extra 14gb plus the fact I'm about to install some digital photo programs...it's time to upgrade the 64gb ssd. (Not many games...mostly productivity...Office, Quicken, Roots Magic genealogy, iTunes, Calibre ebooks, Chrome, photo software will either be Panasonic SilkyPix or Adobe Lightroom. Only game installed currently is Civ 4.)

Realistically, a 128gb is probably fine for me...but then I look at prices and wonder why get only a 128gb at $120-130 when a 180gb can be had for $160 or even a 250/256gb for as low as $170.

So I have identified a couple drives I'm interested in...looking for feedback in terms of value (price). I'm not hung up on drive xyz being microscopically faster than drive abc. They should all be plenty fast for me. I am also interested in reliability. I don't want to have to fight my way through multiple BIOS updates like I did the Crucial M4 (5184 hours bug, drive not showing up in BIOS, etc.).

Also, sad as I am to rule out some great 256gb drives...I'm looking to stay under $200. So, no Samsung 840 Pro 256 or Plextor M5P 256.

So, here are my options:

At 120/128gb:
Samsung 830 (yes, I found 1...1!...place with it still in stock...for now!) - $119
OCZ Vertex 4 - $124
Samsung 840 (NON-Pro) - $90 (this is tempting...)
Samsung 840 Pro - $129

At 180gb:
Intel 330 - $160

At 240/256gb:
Samsung 840 (NON-Pro) 250gb - $166
Intel 335 240gb - $189
Plextor M5s 256gb - $189

Any input?

Planning on making the new drive the primary OS drive. 64gb to be used for secondary storage (photos, ebooks, etc.)

I would take any drive from that list except OCZ.If you want 128 take 840 pro.If you want 256 take that Plextor.
Go for the 840 non-pro, at those prices $/GB is great and it's a great drive, the only drive on that list that's better is the pro version.

Amazon has dropped the price of the crucial m4 256GB to less than $160 twice in the last month. Just wait until they do it again.

I would go for the 840, have the drive myself and I'm very happy with it. The $/Gb ratio is very good for a newly release.

you guys have almost talked me into going for the Samsung 840. A 250gb at that price is awesome considering most 128gb's go for not much less than that.

a few months ago, when the 840 was just coming out I guess, everyone was saying to still go for the 830 over the 840. I know the 830 is now out of stock most everywhere so it is hard to find...but I guess I'm wondering why the opinion has changed so much? Is the 840, even non-pro, just really that good? At least even if not better than the competition?

After reading the SSD forum I have learned that for enthusiasts that the non-pro is just fine.
I have seen the Pro for 229.00 256GB.

I am with you on this one, I bought my OCZ Vertex 128GB last month for $114.00.
and the 256GB was going for $229.00. Prices have come down but I am happy with what I got.
It would be good to put everything on one drive though.. smile.gif

I agree, I love mine.

If I were in your shoes, I would just pick up another 64gb Crucial drive and run Raid0 - 128gb and super fast thumb.gif. You could probably find another one on ebay or in the marketplace for cheap.
