Coil whine bad for your graphics card?

I have the Sapphire HD7950 Vapor-X and while I already asked this in the (7950 Vapor-X voltage locked topic) I decided to make a separate topic smile.gif.

So when I have the card in OC at 1200 / 1500mhz and 1221mv which is the most farthest I can get without artifacts so far I get coil whine in Crysis 3 menu a lot. During gameplay it's less but still there. I also tested Battlefield 3 and well sometime it is ok, sometime it is a lot, depends where your looking at in-game.

3DMark 2013 (Basic) I got a lot of whining in the first 2 benchmarks but the Fire Storm was almost nothing. Putting a frame-rate cap of 60 and it's pretty much gone but can still be heard. If I try 100 then it gets louder.

Lowering the OC to 1100/1500mhz at stock voltage it is almost completely gone.

So I would like to know, is this normal for the Vapor-X? Can it be fixed? If I remember I had a Sapphire HD6870 and also had coil whine in the very beginning but then disappeared. Can't really remember is correctly.

Some say: Launch Crysis 2/3 and stay at the menu where the coil is at it's loudest and let it stay that way for the entire night. Some have reported that the coil whine disappeared.

coil whine is annoying but it doesn't mean that you component is going bad.
coil whine on GPU cannot be fixed, sometime it will go away if you are lucky.

If I RMA the card, is there a chance I get one back without coil whine or is it normal with the Vapor-X to have it?

you can't RMA it because of a coil whine.

It's normal for any graphics card to have, my 680 had it for the first few hours but then it went away. I still get it when I'm in menus and the FPS spikes to like 3000 but other than that it's fine.

i only get coil whine when running super high framerates, like over 500. i ran a 6950 like that for a year or so and didnt notice any degradation. 670 only gets noticeable coil whine in the latest 3dmark when its running 1300fps or something.

Normal from time to time on some cards. My 6970 tends to whine during menu's.
It shouldn't harm your card, Unless the card is getting hot from the higher framerate.
