Overclock a 125 TDP CPU on a 125 Watt Motherboard

Thread Starter
I have the ASRock 960 GM-GS3 FX and I'm planning to put an AMD Phenom II X4 965 on it. I'm curious if i can still overclock the cpu or is it too dangerous? Thanks in advanced.

125W board just means that it can handle a 125W CPU, not that the maximum the CPU can put out is 125W...

Not that I would actually recommend overclocking with that board, but you can sure go for it if you want to thumb.gif

No. I wouldn't do that.

That motherboard simply doesn't have a VRM set up that could handle that kind of current draw.

Make sure you're getting adequate cooling to the VRM and you should be fine.

Worst case scenario a MOSFET explodes.

You can likely do a 100 - 200Mhz increase without increasing the voltage (or by possibly even lowering it) but the question is why? You're not going to see any real world performance gains IMO unless you're severely processor limited in gaming. I'd recommend saving some $$ if you want to O/c and buying a new board

I'd go with this.

A decent quality mATX with a heatsinked 4+1 phase VRM set up will get you where you want to go safely; and for not a lot of money.
