Overclock a 125 TDP CPU on a 125 Watt Motherboard - Page 4

I roll FX-8120 125tdp CPU on "125TPD" board, its clocked to 4ghz and is probably under full load going over 225w (100% on all cores).

Check the numbers on that 965, not all of them are same. BE has 125W limit and one without it can be 95w., has locked multiplier but it can still be OCed a good deal. Also that publicized TDP is the absolute maximum. Right now at 4.1 GHz I get a reading of 123W on my BE. Either way with some care and good cooling you can go above the stock quite a bit.

Howdy folks, finally got my 965BE part in and it's running fairly well. Seems like the board is handling the electricity demands ok, at least for an hour or so.

I think I may have put too much thermal paste on.

stock settings: 34 C idle, 55C load

3.7 GHZ overclock at 1.375 36C idle 58-60C load

4.0 GHZ over at 1.402 37C idle 63-65C prime95 load

So far this is what i am getting with overdrive. I can run prime95 at 4ghz but I am wary of letting it go longer than an hour because by then temperatures loiter at 65C.

I'm hoping this is thermal paste issue and I don't have to dial it back. When the prime95 goes off, it cools quickly though.

Someone asked about processor batch, here are the letters and numbers off the front. Not sure what is what.

That's the one. it is a black edition

That means you should be able to get in to BIOS and change multiplier to OC. That's the most painless way.
It's the same as mine.

banana,

this your board?

make sure you point a fan over the area i highlighted. if you can install some enzotech heatsinks on them that would be ideal. make sure you've got good airflow.

edit: here is a good store . . .

I think that UD5 boards have heat sink over VRM and is connected to NB cooler with a heat pipe. Right now I'm hunting for a dead MB that has it. Problem is there's so many dead MSI boards and can't find any Gigabyte ones. Don't know why they do not put those sinks on all the boards when they already have 8+2 VRM.

I have the blue and white version of that board. It also has no heat sinks on mosfets. Currently need to pop the battery because it won't post with 2600 NB at 1.2nbcpu volts and 1.1 NB volts. Will try to bump those up since everyone says they're capable.
