Might have a golden 975 Chip, but I'm having heat troubles when I shouldn't - Page 3

Not bad. Mines prime stable 4Ghz at 1.38v. I'll check when I get home. I think it needs 1.45 for 4.3Ghz and ~1.5 for 4.4Ghz which isn't really prime stable for a long time.

Decided to recheck my OC in prime at 4.3ghz and 1.425v. This time core 3 failed at 2 hours in but did I did not BSOD. So, I increased the voltage to 1.4375v and this time 4 hours into prime95 small test I had a BSOD. I've now increased the voltage to 1.45v and am running prime95 to see if that should clear things up. It's interesting to note that HW monitor shows it peaking at 1.5v full load. Still around ~61 celcius full load.

May be worth trying out on its own but combined with your overclocked settings I can almost gurrantee it will create instability

You have to be careful of Vcore flucuations. When I was OC'ing my chip the other night a little, after dialing in my ram a bit more, and noticed that when I manually set my CPU to 1.45 it shot past 1.55v during Prime. I immediately shut it down, changed it back to 1.42 and it maxes out at 1.49-1.5v during prime @3.9

I have issues with BSOD with anything past 3.9 and thats up to 1.5v which is as far as I'm willing to go. When I had just under 3.8 it was @ 1.308v and had a core fail at about 5 hours in prime. But never in a game or anything, so it was fine for me. I was hoping I could hit 4 since it was looking nice. You hit 4.3 @ 1.456 which is sweet. That's where I'd likely stop just for thermal reasons. I don't like going into the 60's at all for my CPU. I get annoyed if I pass 55C.

4.5ghz.jpg 255k .jpg file

Ok guys, I got my computer to post at 4.56ghz and was able to keep it stable long enough to take a screenshot. If I had watercooling, I think 4.4ghz would be achievable at the very least.
i would definitely be content if you could get 4.3ghz. thats crazy good out of a 975. must have hit the silicon lottery man! Good pickup though, serious. ive seen these less then decent results on other forums so obviously got a solid quad chip. thumb.gif

Yep, I'm very lucky. Something I should note for you guys is that I've also got all 4 ram DIMMS filled, which I hear lowers your ability to OC. What do you guys think, is that true?

No other CPU I've had before would OC higher than 600 mhz stable, and even then 600 was a stretch. I got this from Ebay, too, for only $80. Crazy.

I think I'm gonna try to hit 4.3-4.4ghz in the future, then pick up another 7850 to run in xfire later on when they're cheap.

Man oh man.

That sounds allright. I'd recommend selling the 7850 and getting a 7970 but that's just me and my single card preference.

What about just getting a 7970 and running both in Xfire?

I know it wouldn't be as fast as two 7970's, but it might be worth it.

Very good work. Just pushing the Mutli or pushing the FSB also?

As for the Xiggy. Are you using the original clip? I use a 1283 and got a custom bracket made and sold through a user here on OCN that makes the heatsink mount vertical instead of horizontal. The hard mount bracket probably gets better clamping pressure and better pressure should help heat transfer better.

Also what fans are you using on there? for awhile I used 2x Slipsteams 1900rpms. Using push/pull I've noticed issues with extra noise on the pull fan. Currently using a Coolermaster R4 fan with a fan shroud in between and let the case fan do the pull work. Been thinking of looking for a high static pressure fan like the gentle typhoon 1400/1800 to mess with.

Usually have a low ambient though (keep the house at 65F) but the room is much cooler than that.
