Is this a good 24/7 3930k Overclock?

Hey everybody this is my first time overclocking (at least in the last 7 years), I wanted to ask if this looks like a good overclock for 24/7 low risk (I know there is always risk, but life is all about risk). I did the slow method: push the multiplier up by one, ran 10 minute test of prime 95, repeat. I got all the way to 4.6Ghz before Windows refused to start, so I backed it off to 4.4Ghz. Never exceeded 59C.

4.5Ghz

4.4Ghz (what I'm setting it at)

Offset: 0.005v, LLC level 2, going to run a long torture test tomorrow for the final check.

On another note, sometimes after I save and quite out of Bios, my windows splash screen has visual errors (red dots and lines) and the second it gets to Windows no problem, restart computer nothing, start the computer after shutdown (100s of times) no problem playing games doesn't even bother it. The first time it happened I almost had a Heart attack (O MY GERD I BLEW MY GPU). It only happens sometimes when I save and quite out of Bios (AsRock Xtreme 9, Newest Bios Driver, Sapphire Vapor X 7970 13.2 beta driver) Is it just technology being fickle, or did I bone myself somehow? (I'm well aware I'm SOL for warranties, so don't need that nagging)

Bonus, check out how bad the Pre set AsRock Overclocking profile does things: doh.gif

Use Prime 27.7 or 27.9 for the AVX instruction set.

Older Prime is easy to pass with a not so stable overclock.

Hey man, thanks for the information(Rep for you) downloaded it and re-ran the test:

Also my LLC is level 3, core power limit 500, turbo voltage increase 0.004v. I have high hopes (but I'm still skeptical) cheers.gif

Sorry if this is stuff you already know, but here is my standard Prime95 advice after overclocking three chips recently.

Use 27.9 not 27.7, there are some potential multithreading issues in 27.7 from what I understand. Check SUM(INPUTS) and Round off checking under Advanced, some debate whether this is necessary but you only have to check them once so might as well. Run a custom Torture test and just change the Memory to use to 90% of your available ram per Task Manager.

Don't use the computer for other things while checking for stability, it can potentially cause issues while trying to determine if you are really stable. 24 hours of Prime95 with no stopped workers, no instability of any kind, and no WHEA logger warnings in Event Viewer, and you should be good. You can also check IBT 20 passes at max settings.

I appreciate any input from this fine community, also, would Everest 5.02 stress test do the job? Downloaded 4 different version of prime 95 tonight lol, and everybody has had something to say about it. buttkick.gif But does anybody have any ideas about the random buggy Windows splash screens?

27.9 is the most current, no reason to use any other version right now. Every other stress test out there can help you confirm your stability, run whatever ones you want. I would recommend getting 24 hours Prime95 stable first though, then use anything else you want to confirm it.

I am not familiar with the red dots/lines, but if I had that I would remove the video card and inspect it and the slot, then if it all appears good reinstall it and make sure it is seated all the way in. Additionally you could try to reflash bios, and uninstall and reinstall the video card drivers.

Alright, I'm testing my computer with prime 95 27.9 wink.gif 100% CPU usage 95% Ram usage. Had a small issue in the beginning where I to restart everything (Left sleep mode on doh.gif). But now been going strong for an hour (no sleep mode). Max temp so far is 60C, but it looks like I need to re-paste. The cores in the center #3,4,5 are all running at least 7C lower then cores #1,2,6. I used the single dot method but it looks like I didn't use enough (please laugh at my noobery). Would the line method work any better, and whats the best way to do it with a six core chip?

There will always be differences between cores, but I have not had your chip before so I can't say what is normal for you. In Ivy chips you can get differences of 7 or 8c and that is not usual. How you spread the TIM depends on which one you use and your particular cooler.

Here is my long post on applying TIM (aka paste):

One thing to say, six core processors probably produce a lot of heat devil.gif. I'm cooling it with a XSPC rx360 radiator with a 3push(2000rpm) 2pull(200mm, 700rpm) with my D5 pump set on half, is 61C max temp running prime 95 on the high side for a custom water-cooled setup? (Or was I optimistic on it's abilities). Also the power fan usually on the back of the case that exhaust hot air, would it be beneficial to reverse it so it blows more air in (more fresh air right into the radiator intake)?

The idea with case fans is usually to be pulling from the front and exhaust out the back, so I don't think reversing them make sense. For expert water cooling or case fan advice, I would suggest searching those particular parts of this site. If you don't find what you are looking for, just start a thread in that specific category. I am not an expert in either of those two things so I don't want to misdirect you on anything.
