Some Questions About AMD Bulldozer

Thread Starter
Since the launch of the Bulldozer architecture, there has been some questions that i've always wanted to ask, some dont even deserve a thread as they are so small... Also, im referring to the FX8350, 6300 and 4300, Not APU's

1, Bulldozer performs better in Linux than Windows?

2, If you disable the modules, you get better gaming (Singlethreaded) Performance

3, Faster RAM has an effect on CPU Performance?

4, Intel i5 3570k and a FX8350 is a difference of night and day in games?

If you could answer these then you would clear my mind a bit

First of all, the x3xx AMD CPUs aren't Bulldozer but Piledriver. Bulldozer is x1xx.

  1.  Yes, but there is a fix available. You'll have to email Microsoft though if you want it.
  2. No of course not, that wouldn't make any sense. The power per core performance always stays the same.
  3. Not on raw CPU performance but it is beneficial for most applications.
  4. No. In singlethreaded games, the i5 is better and in mt'ed games the 8350 is better. Note that when the new consoles come out, most games will be multithreaded.

Hope that solved your questions smile.gif

I was referring to Bulldozer in general (This includes Zambezi and Piledriver) Since Piledriver is 2nd Gen Bulldozer

Thanks for the info, if anyone else wants top pitch in feel welcome

1) Not a Linux expert, sorry.

2) You don't actually mean single-threaded here. You mean does it get better per-core performance. The answer is: almost never. Theoretically you could run into some situation where two cores are being used, both cores need to make use of shared module resources, but the CPU schedules two cores on the same module to run those tasks, resulting in a slight slowdown compared to the same processors with half the cores turned off (preventing any possibility of two cores needing shared module resources at the same time). That's the theoretical answer. The practical answer is: no, you're not going to see better gaming performance by disabling half your cores.

3) Faster RAM has no effect on CPU performance. It can be of extremely minor use in some applications, but generally cheap RAM at 1333 or 1600 mhz is going to be just as good as faster RAM for real-world purposes.

4) No, most games don't give a crap what processor you have since they do most of their heavy lifting with the GPU. When there is some minor benefit (the more extreme SC2 or Shogun 2: Total War situations, for example), then the i5-3570k will be better.

Yes thanks, that was what I was thinking.

Theoritecily speaking, would it be able to lower power consumption by under clocking, undervolting and disabling cores when in idle or not as much power in (IE dynamicly turn on cores?)?

I dunno, maybe. But if you want lower power consumption, why not just buy Intel?

4. No. Unless you play cpu intensive games smile.gif

Sorry to go off topic but 953 posts in like 1 month!!!!
Wow!

Very interested myself, I heard Piledrivers are good for editing software and renders because some software utilize all of the cores available..
