stay away from XFX DD coolers. they get hot and loud. go for the HD 7870 Tahiti LE. this chip is got from disabling 512 stream processors and 128 bit memory bus from the Tahiti chip which powers HD 7970. 1536 stream processors at 975 mhz on HD 7870 Tahiti LE vs 1280 stream processors at 1000 mhz on the HD 7870 Pitcairn. 256 bit memory at 6 Ghz (192 Gb/s) on Tahiti LE vs 256 bit memory at 5 Ghz (160 Gb/s) on HD 7870 Pitcairn. the sapphire HD 7870 XT is a very good card. has an excellent dual x cooler which is much better than the Powercolor PCS+ MYST HD 7870 Tahiti LE.
performs like a HD 7950(800 Mhz) at stock. when overclocked to 1.2 ghz performs like a HD 7970(925 Mhz).
in answer to OPs question, they are equally matched as far as processing power. the 7870 is better because of the larger available memory. and contrary to what others have posted, XFX DD coolers aren't bad for stock clocks. mine will run 100% load at 50% fan and stay at 70C.
CF scaling in best cases is 1.8x . so 49 x 1.8 = 88.2 . HD 7870 is faster than HD 7770 CF. CF never scales perfectly in all games. in few games it could scale only 1.4x - 1.5x. in some games CF just won't work. with CF you face issues like microstuttering. CF is not a good option except at the high end where you want to run multiple monitor. in those cases HD 7970 CF is the only option.
Thanks guess I will go with the Tahiti LE . Always liked Sapphire cards just been away from AMD for awhile . Reps to u raghu 78
