Please reccommend a Sound Card & Head Set Combo - Page 4

Appreciate the suggestions, advice and your experience Tjj226 Angel, thank you.

I didn't even think of the Sennheiser HD600. Even though the 600 or even 650 is over my cash budget, I do have a Newegg card and those are sold on Newegg....credit budget is higher. redface.gif

Thanks for suggesting those as I had only seen Sennheiser HD800 being mentioned in the OCN guide for 'ultimate gamer' head phones but crazy expensive. I'm looking into the HD600 right now.

I'm going to guess the HD600 would fall into the ultimate gamer category being more detailed or analytic somewhere in between the Q701 / DT880 PRO?

I saw Sennheiser HD650 and thinking that might fall into the 'compromising gamer' area?

I would for sure get HE400 over either HD 600 or 650.

Here's something else to think about, if you pick headphones like Q701 and decide they need to be EQed for bass boost, then a soundcard might be a better option as your DAC because it will allow global hardware EQ. With a standalone DAC you'll just have software EQ in your playback program but not for games or other applications.

Question for Angel: Can you EQ the Q701 into basshead territory?

First, thank you all for your help thus far being pointed to good head set. I'm not an audiophile (yet) and wanted to get the right head set that will be the go to for everything for at least two years. I'm almost done with the decision and valued everyone opinions given.

After reading tons of reviews, OCN threads, and your help I've narrowed it down and learned a lot. I thought I was the ultimate gamer at first but turns out I'm more in between ultimate gamer and compromising gamer. If not all really all compromising gamer.

After looking into both HD600 and HD650 on Monday I'm 80% sure of pulling the trigger on the - Sennheiser HD650. If I'm making the wrong decision please give advice.

Here's why I think it'd suit me better:

Looks: I like the color of the H650 a LOT more than the marble blue of the HD600.

Quality: I'd want the thicker cord that comes with the HD650. I saw that some of the H600 users actually bought the compatible thicker HD650 cord in the reviews. The claimed it was questionably perceived as slightly better audible. So if I did the same which I would because of my own OCD it would add $25 to the HD600 price.

Sounds: As for sounds it looks like I don't lose too much of the 600 more accurate sounds and not as neutral. Giving more mid-range which sounds better on heavy metal, hard rock songs I enjoy like Rage Against the Machine, Metallica. I'm hoping this set might be the in between ultimate and compromising gamer. Don't get me wrong I need a good gaming head set but not the sole focus because I'll be wearing them more to listen to music cranked up in a quite home at night while I surf. smile.gif ...moderate. tongue.gif

I'm purchasing on Newegg credit so I've got the side cash for a Woo single stand for my investment to sit on. The HD650 sits dead center of the Woo in the center of the foam and dosen't put pressure on the pads or the top cushions when you look at the HD650 pads you'll see what I mean.
HD650 on Woo Audio Head Set Stand (Click to show)

Lastly unless someone says otherwise I'm getting The Schiit M&M combo to power these. Unless someone points out why the ASUS Xonar Essence ST will drive this head set better, I'll be pulling the plug on Monday morning as well.

Crunch time.....

I agree. I personally like the He-400s over the sennheiser stuff, but some people don't like it it because it is a heavier set of headphones. I personally don't mind. Since they are orthodynamic, they are very easy to listen to.

@Dr. Groove: I like fuller and warmer bass. In other words, I like the bass guitar, not the computer generated bass like in dubsteup. I feel fairly confident that they can, but if you recommend me a couple of songs, I could take a more in depth look.

The other thing is that the Q701s sound MUCH better with using vacuum tubes than a solid state solution. The get a lot more bass just with that alone, and the harshness of the highs is GREATLY reduced. The reason I love these headphones is because if you get them, you can make them sound better with the correct gear. Eventually you acquire enough great gear, that the last step would be upgrading your headphones to a LCD2 or something like that. So in essence, instead of sinking 2K+ on audio gear right off the bat, these headphones allow you to work into superb audio while investing minimally over time.

Hmmmm well I will be honest, the HD600s are probably going to work better for games, and the HD 650s are going to be better for music. I felt that the HD600s are a bit more accurate, and the HD650s are not as much but at the same time it actually works well with music. But I am telling you, if you can stand the extra weight (not that much really) the HE-400s are sounding more and more like what you should be buying. The highs and the bass and even mids are better on the highfi mans.

Color does not matter when they are on your head tongue.gif

Also, don't wast your time with headphone stand. Stands are a completely load of you know what. I put my headphones on my screen. It works just as well.

Thanks for your reply. smile.gif The reason I'm not looking at the HE-400 is if I'm buying from Newegg my budget with credit is higher than the cash on hand if not. I didn't want to be limited to Newegg so if I'm going cash I'm back to Q701 or DT990 or DT880 Pro 250 Ohm perhaps with M&M combo.

So I'm down to three.....HD650/600, Q701, or DT990/880's.

Oh, my bad. I could have sworn newegg sold the HE-400s.

I would say the HD600s are your best bet. The HD650s are nothing more than HD600s for 100 bucks more. There is VERY little difference.

If you are worried about the cable, then I would say make your own. It is so easy a cave man could do it (hopefully you remember the old geico commercials). You can actually make it sound better if you get higher quality cable too. Plus, if you are planning on using these headphones with just your magni and modi, you can use a 6.3mm plug vs the stock 3.5mm plug with the adapter which will also improve your sound slightly.

The only problem is I can not remember the name of the type of connector that the HD600s uses for the headphone.

But it will be no more than 15 for all the plugs.

http://plussoundaudio.com/wires.html (this is only if you want to be fancy)

And maybe 20 bucks for 20 feet of cat 5 ethernet cable?

If you don't have a soldering gun, barrow one or get one for 10 bucks.

In any case, it shouldn't cost you more than 50 bucks total to make a cable that is better than the HD650s

Between the HD650 and Q701 which I had the honor to test for a good 2 hours each (not enough, I know...) on a Schiit Valhala, I honestly thought that the HD650 was just somewhat clearer on the mids.
I'm not saying it is a huge difference, but theres a little bit of spice on the mids which makes the HD650 quite... soothing to listen to? It's definitely accurate and like you said, it's a boon for heavy metal (I was listening to Machinae Supremacy).

Comfort wise, I honestly didn't like the bumps on the headband the Q701 has. It was quite annoying as I would keep adjusting the headband. Although I know I could get used to it after a while since I only spent 2 hours with it, just something I thought you might wanna know.

Yeah with the Q701s I tapped a foam pad to the headband.

Do you remember if the tubes had been switched out or not? The stock tubes on the valhalla are awful.
