[Neowin] Lines form around the US for the Surface Pro Launch - Page 8

let's not get off topic here. piers morgan is irrelevant to the topic at hand and political posts are not needed here

My input on topic: I think MS will definately try to find funny ways to make the sales of the surface pro look better than they are. That being said I hope the surface does well and gives the ipad some competition. but only time will tell. Lenovo has a new tablet out that runs windows 8 pro and it looks pretty awesome so the surface may be outpaced by other companies products already before it gets a chance.

The idea of a windows 8 pro tablet its great, as i cant stand IOS and although i love android on my GS3 I dont think it's very productive on a tablet. but it remains to be seen if Microsoft will have the best solution in implementing the idea

This. I bought original Zune when it first released. I loved that little brick. I also bought the Zune HD on release, and sadly it wasn't built nearly as well as its older brother.

The Surface Pro isn't meant to compete with the iPad even though it keeps getting compared to it in reviews. They completely differ in ergonomics (due to size), weight, UI, base price and market segment. That's the point of the Surface w/ Windows RT.

Yep. The bottom line is capability - a 3rd generation core i5 outperforms any ARM based device by a factor of 300-500%. MBA or ultrabooks are a valid comparison, ipad is not.

Obviously having an i5 has implications on battery life, be that as it may - having compatibility with billions of x86 applications such as photoshop, CS5, etc, etc makes it one of the absolute best things ever. Onenote with the included pen is also pretty awesome. You can't do such things on an ipad, the ipad is a cheap low performance ARM device used for media consumption. Yet, since some in the mainstream media are clueless on technical matters they will judge the SP on form factor alone. Whatever.

although I whole heartedly agree that they should be considered in different segments of the market the fact is that with the average consumer they will not be seen much differently.

Most users from what I understand don't want 5 devices of similar nature to accomplish similar things. Thats the idea behind a tablet/ touch device, smaller more mobile and can do everything you'd need to do on the go. So people want something that fits all their needs and while the ipad was never intended to be a work station most accessories for it have tried to make it as such. Thus many people look at a surface whether it be pro or rt as a direct competitor to the ipad with a keyboard accessory.

And when someone has to just choose one product ( because its unlikely they will have more than one tablet, and a smart phone) it makes sense that they should be regarded as competitors not because its fair or technically accurate but thats how the mainstream market users will see it and the market perception will drive sales on way or another and thats all that maters here when talking units sold and profits.

I've long stopped taking the opinions of apple fanboys seriously - in general, their technical knowledge is laughable.
Eh, it has nothing to do with fanboyism on either side. It's really just that tech sites see it as a tablet thus it must be compared to all the other tablets.

Yeah, you're right I suppose. Still, I'll be happy when mainstream media looks beyond the form factor and ask themselves, "what can I do on this machine".

I think the battery life issues will be solved with Haswell - it is reported to have nearly triple the battery life of existing IVB parts. If that's true, i'm definitely excited.

The Surface Pro sold out because it's a good product. The comparisons to the Palm Pre and the Zune are clever, but irrelevant.

I use primarily Microsoft product, hate pretty much all the major tech guys as companies, including Apple and Google, but these articles are likely right on the money.

I'd agree about music players, except for battery life.
Smartphones need to make better gains in battery life
