Intel Budget

Thread Starter
Hey all!

Looking to get a new build but for a fairly low budget. I've never gone the route of intel and I'm a pretty big noob!

Please critique and tell me if you've got any better suggestions or if there are any compatibility problems. I'd obviously love to save money if you've got suggestions for cheaper but equal performance parts!

This is the build:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/CwpM

This is another build I original had set out but figured the Intel would probably be more bang for the extra buck:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Cwox

Is the extra money in the Intel worth enough performance over the AMD to justify the price difference?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, this would solely be used for CS:GO & hopefully streaming it, nothing else.

well it'll be a good jump going from the 4200+ to a 965x4,,,,and then another good jump going with the intel,,i played lots of games with the 965x4,,it will keep up to the 7850 easy,,,the intel would be a little better yet

your existing psu should work well also,,save a few $$,,,,maybe then go the intel route,,,or a fx 6300,,

Well for CS:GO any decent processor coupled with a 7850 could push 60 fps easily. But streaming adds something new to the equation. The AMD FX 8350 has been tested to perform better with streaming than the i5 3570k so logically the 8320 would be better than the 3470 you have listed. However like I said before it won't make a huge difference considering what you plant to do with it.

Another question though is overclocking. The i5 3470 will not allow for overclocking while the FX 8320 will. For an extra $30 you could buy a decent CPU cooler and slap it on the AMD for extra performance via overclocking.

Another option would be to go down to something like an AMD FX 6300 for the processor and grab a higher quality motherboard which would allow for more stable overclocking and a better overall system. here are some examples:

Option 1 (CPU/Mobo):

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130679

Option 2 (CPU/Mobo):

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128514

These are just examples. I just newegg just for easiness purposes but the price for the newegg canada site are pretty high.

An i5-3470 is going to stream CS:GO just fine. CS:GO doesn't take that much CPU oomph, so you don't need any special needs processor to stream it with no performance loss.

And yes, you definitely don't want a Phenom II x4. That's just too old. Don't worry about not being able to overclock the i5. It will still beat the AMD fx chips per core (aka gaming performance) in almost all situations.

The build looks pretty good, though you're over-estimating your power needs. You can get an Antec Neo eco 400c for pretty cheap on newegg. Though you'll need a spare power cord from something to plug it in. Oh, Canada. Look for something like an XFX core 450w then. Also, pick a local retailer so you can go pick this stuff up at the store & not pay shipping & handling. Then price match everything so you still get the cheapest prices.

Thanks for the help so far everyone!

So I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but my brother has the AMD build for (minecraft + streaming purposes). I just installed CS:GO on it and it ran beautifully...until I tried streaming with FFSplit, and it was unplayable at about 10-15fps, so you're right, that's out of the question for sure.

This might be a silly question but Twitch.tv lists a 2500k in their recommended specs list for streaming games. This runs a little more in $$$ but looks to score a tad lower than the 3470 here. Now since I'm a noob, I don't know how relevant those benchmarks are to what I'm looking for, so if anyone could help me understand why the 2500k scores lower but costs more that would be hugely helpful!

The i5-3470 does better in that benchmark because its ivy bridge (better architecture) and both are at stock. The i5-2500k is better because it can be overclocked (with the appropriate motherboard). At stock it is worse.
