Low PPD on ATI cards

Thread Starter
I was looking at the GPU PPD database and was shocked to see such low scores on ATI cards.

I mean only few were over 6-7k.
Whereas in Nvidia, 10k+ is common.
So should I really focus on Nvidia ? I'm a serious folder and folds 24/7(minus 3-4 hours) on my G620
I am thinking of buying a second hand gpu. Would be gtx 460 or a 5850

As of right now, nvidia cards are the ones to buy.

...but not for long.

A new core is in development with the F@H team (which I am happy to say I am currently beta testing smile.gif ) that will even out the playing field between the cards, making them very similar pointswise.

I've talked to proteneer, and he said the cards will be much more balanced after this core and the new WU's have been released though, so that's where I get my info from.

'Balanced' doesn't give a reference point in comparison to current PPD.
Currently, nVidia are the only cards that really give you good PPD. There are rumors that one day AMD will give some good numbers, but that has been promised for years. I'm sure that some of the Beta Testers are seeing numbers on AMD cards that are nice, but that doesn't mean they will stay. After all, the nVidia Folders were seeing 100k plus PPD on the 8057 work units a couple months ago, but they haven't been available in over 2 months now.

I'm not saying that EVENTUALLY AMD cards won't be posting good numbers, but as of right now, they don't even hold a candle to a 3-4 year old nVidia card.

So I guess I'll just go with Nvidia.

If you are JUST concerned about Folding NOW, then yes. If you are a gamer, then the choice it up to you. You might get lucky and in a couple months and they might be as good as nVidia. Hard to tell.

Are you just looking to help out with Folding by doing it occasionally or are you looking at joining a team and competing? Even in Team Competition, there is a specific AMD Folding slot, and any team that wants to stand a chance at being in the top 3-4 in their division must have a good AMD Folder in their ranks, so if you really have your heart set on AMD, and you want to join a Team, you will still be a valuable member. You just can't compare your numbers to the nVidia Folders, but if you compare yourself to other AMD Folders, then you will not be disappointed.

Shameless plug for OCN Folding Teams ...

Overclock.net has a monthly Team Competition where 21 teams of 6 members fold competitively. Stats are tracked for users and teams. The minimum folding requirement for the competition is 20/7 although 24/7 is preferred. If you're interested in joining, please fill out this form. Here are a few helpful links containing information on the competition: Vacant TC Positions | Live TC Standings | Team Competition Manual

^^ buy a 5870, crank up the V, and join a folding team cause god knows we need more AMD folders, even though i have been seeing more 5870's lately which is nice thumb.gif
