Choosing a new keyboard

Thread Starter
I am going to be getting another mechanical keyboard in the coming weeks and I thought I knew what I wanted but after doing some looking, im confused about what would be the best way to go. I currently use a CM Quickfire TKL with blues (I take it to work each day and bring it home) and I want to keep this board at work since it it nice to type on. for the board i keep at home, I want to splurge a bit more. I know i want some soft, linear switch (mx-reds) and a TKL or smaller board. Here are some of the items I am considering currently:

KBT Pure 60 (red switch / green LED) - 119 USD (was my definite choice until I started looking again)
Leopold Tenkeyless Linear Touch "Otaku" Keyboard - 99 USD
Topre Realforce 87U Tenkeyless 55g (Black) - 250 USD - Very steep price tag....Im sure it is worth it, but still hard to justify.
Happy Hacking Professional 2 (Dark Gray, Non-Printed) - 270 USD - Steeper than the other...Yikes

So I come to everyone here to ask, Is there a good small layout keyboard that im missing? I really like compact layouts and unique boards. Are the really expensive boards worth the price or is the KBT pure / Leopold good enough?

Thanks for the help.

Have you looked at the Filco TKL boards at all? I have one of their full size boards and the build quality is great. It's a fantastic board and would recommend it! I haven't tried reds but it seems that you're set on those so I would take a look!

Price shouldn't be as steep as some that you have listed either.

I don't mean to state the obvious, but have you considered the Ducky TKL boards?

I have no experience with those $200+ keyboards. I can only recommend what I've used, that would be Ducky Shine II if you want back-light, Filco if not. Could just be me, but I feel my Filco is slightly better built than the ducky.

Since I posted I did look at both the Filco and the Ducky and basically re-did the list to only inlucde:

Ducky Shine TKL w/reds
Filco TKL w/reds
HHKB II
Realforce 87U

I know know why, but I keep getting drawn to the Topre switches (I would hate to pass up the opportunity to buy one and I really like the HHKB) but i know I would be happy with the Ducky or Filco (I would probably get the Filco).

Would this be primarily for gaming? What you'll be using it for might rule out some that you've got in the list and make the decision easier. smile.gif

Gaming used to be the primary use for my keyboards but now I do more coding than gaming (probably about 65/35).

I am really down to 2 keyboards, the HHKB II and the Filco TLK (decided against a backlit kb). Ill probably get the Filco, get some key caps for it and my current kb (and still have about 100 left over), but I cant help still thinking the HHKB II is the way to go... It makes me think that the only real reason I want it is because it is top of the line and expensive (and who doesnt want top of the line and expensive smile.gif)

I still have some time to think since I wont be ordering until this weekend, at least
