Unlock afterburner?

I'm new to over clocking gpu and very confused on how to do it? How do I stress test, monitor, and safe temps for the his 7970 with waterblock? Do I also need to unlock afterburner?

in afterburner, all of the settings like memory & core clocks would be unlocked except for voltages which can be unlocked by gooing to the settings tab and check Enable voltage control. Also, for benching the card, you could use Heaven, 3D Mark11, 3D Mark 13, Furmark & also MSI Kombuster. Safe temps would be around 60-70*C under load.

Yeah but if I start seeing artifacts do I used the voltage? How do I know if the oc is stable?

You shouldn't need to unlock Afterburner for a 7970, but you might if it's some sort of OEM one. Not sure.

If you need it there it is.

I use Unigine Heaven for stress testing/bench marking. There are a lot of things you can use, including actual games you're playing. Just make sure you know the difference between a stress test and a pure benchmark. Heaven kind of does both.

Afterburner will keep track of temps, clock speeds, voltage, etc. for you.

If you see artifacts it isn't stable, increase voltage. If you can pass a couple runs of Heaven or whatever test you use without artifacts or crashes, you're stable. GPUs don't typically require 12 hour tests like CPUs.

you bench it. For a good 1hr bench it with Heaven or Furmark(my favourite), or 3D Mark. Once your system hangs, bump up the voltage by .05-.1mv and bench again.

I wouldn't use furmark as a stress test. I've had clocks that were stable in furmark but not in game.

So which first memory or core? If use heaven, what settings do I use? For stress testing using heaven do I click benchmark or just leave it running? What is the max voltage is can go up to 24/7?
