Having Wireless Speed Issues with my Router

My girlfriend has a wireless router at her house, its either a Belkin Dual Band N600 or N300 wireless router. I think its the N600 and was bought about a year ago.

If you plug in to the router and speed test the router you get 15mbps.

However even sitting next to the router if you speed test the wireless connection its 1-2mbps.. Both my Galaxy Nexus and her HP laptop has good signal strength, but the speed itself is horrible.

There isnt anything I could think of that could cause this problem.. Anyone have an idea??

I have a Linksys E3000 router at my home and get 30-35mbps plugged in and thought my house the wireless is 20-25mbps.. Unless you in the basement it goes down to 15ish.. I pay extra for faster internet..

I am wondering if I have to buy a new router before I move in with her..

Used Speedtest.net for these results.. Tested multiple times.. Only thing I could think of it the amount of snow we have in the Northeast area.. But I have just as much snow at my house and that isnt a problem..

Is her wifi secured, if so what security does she use on the router? WEP, WPA, WPA2?

What channel is the wifi running on? 1-11

Are you in an house/townhouse with possibly saturated wifi (lots of wireless neighbors)?

Is her router N rated? does it run on 2.4 or 5.0 ghz? or auto a/b/g compatibility mode?

sorry, lots of questions but most can affect the wifi throughput

Thanks for the reply I could really use the help.

Its a house she shares with 3 other people. In a normal neighborhood. They all share the same WiFi.. so you got 2-3 people on it and one playing Xbox.. no ones streaming or Torrenting.

Its a secure connection but I don't know which security.. I doubt anyone rele did anything other than plug it in and put a password on it.. there not tech savvy.

I would guess since its a dual band n600 or n300.. its both 2.4/5.0 but Id have to review the product..
No clue on channel..

http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemNumber=N82E16833314082

Has the 2.4/5 signal and the WPA and WPA security.. no wep

I can have her reset it or try to access the router.. not currently there only see her on weekends..

Any more help is appreciated

My tips since you're not over there but here's what I would do in your situation, try each before trying them all at once.

Verify that they set the wifi password and not just the router password, if it's not correct then apply a new password.

Double triple check that it's on WPA/WPA2 smile.gif

Check the network connections screen and see how many people are attached to the wifi and if there are unrecognized devices then change the password and have everyone re-connect to boot the other people.

Change the wifi channel selection, 1, 6 and 11 are the only real viable channels. Switch to one of those 3 channels and test throughput with speedtest.net. This will sometimes net a few Mbps after getting a good channel, moreover if there are alot of wireless land line phones, microwaves and electrical devices they will interfere with the wifi so keep changing till it works.

If all devices in the house are N rated (sometimes Gameboys aren't frown.gif ) devices then turn off a/b/g compatibility mode and switch to N mode (5.0 ghz) only.

One other thing to try if none of the above works is disabling WMM and QOS, they are power saving features for mobile devices. When you disable it then the priority system WMM provides is then disabled and mobile devices may lose battery quicker when on wifi. However that option may negatively affect some devices, so it's not a guarantee.

After you've done a bunch of changes then definitely reboot the router like you said.

Thanks! Those are things I will have to do next week.

As there's no way she will be able to do it..

Hopefully that fixes it.. worse comes to worse I'll need to but a new one.if the wireless portion of the router is shot..

Any recommendations on one? I'll need to get one when her and I get a place together..

I believe this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=33-122-326 was the router we used at an office, this may be slightly newer but we always had good luck with it. Also looks like over 900 people give it about 4 stars so it doesn't look like a very risky purchase at about $100 bucks.

Generally the more you pay for a router the better the results, they just "route" better lol.
