sell the HD 6870. get a HD 7950 boost. firstly the HD 6870 CF scaling can vary from game to game. even in the best cases its slower than HD 7950 boost. secondly the 1 GB VRAM will bottleneck you badly at 5760 x 1080. thirdly with multi gpu you will face microstuttering and will not be as smooth as single GPU.

your phenom II X6 at 3.8 ghz will do fine. if you go CF in future then you can consider an upgrade to haswell or steamroller.

If you want to be sure you're not bottlenecking, get the 7870 and you'll be just fine.

7950 won't be bottlenecked in most games, but there will mild bottlenecking in others. Not too much to worry about though, imo, as long as you're running fast RAM.

As others have said, definitely go with a new single card instead of trying to crossfire your 6870 with another one. CF issues and low VRAM make using two older 6870s not worthwhile.

Vote for the 7950. Mine OC'd to 1200/1400 performs equally, if not better than my previous GTX 680 Lightning @1228Mhz in BF3 with everything ramped up to ultra. Most 7950's do 1100 on core pretty effortlessly.

As mentioned many times over, you won't be bottlenecked in most cases, exceptions being cpu hungry games such as BF3. Even though you're running multiple screens, the 7950 should get you somewhere, and i'd deffo take one over 2x6870.

Get the 7950 for that res.

very good point! i will actually look forward to that!

thanks!

Hey, I like the Lemmie and Little Ronnie James having a beer avatar ... RIP RJD!!! Believe it or not, I saw Sabbath with Dio on the Heaven & Hell tour (and saw Dio on the Sacred Heart tour) ... I was pretty young, but ... yeah ... brettjv is pretty much as old as dirt wink.gif

And I concur ... at that kind of resolution a CPU BN would be very rare, esp. if you run a bit of MSAA on your games. You'll be GPU-limited a vast majority of the time. And you'd DEFINITELY be much better off with a 7950 vs crossfiring your current card.

Thanks. Nice, i however didn't ever have the chance to, but oh well.

Offtopic, but OP has had his answer by now.

Get as high of a performing card as possible with the triple 1080p monitors. No, I don't believe you need to upgrade your CPU at this time. perhaps get even better cooling and overclock it some more if you want.

I was planning to get either 7870 or 7950. Do you think im gonna bottleneck my gpu? Also do you think buying neither of those cards will run games such as battlefield 3 on ultra?

Thanks!

For reference, I was starting to see a bottleneck in the 50-90 fps rage with my 1090t @ 4.0 ghz in most games.

A single 6870 should give you around 40 fps on ultra with no AA on 1680x1050.
