Am I going to like this?

Thread Starter
I'm building a AMD FX 8350 and don't have a lot of money left. I need to get a video card. Looking to stay in the low 200. This is what I found so far. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125363. This is on a Asus Crosshair V. My sli is 2.0. Any ideas would be most welcome.

can you stretch it to: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131484&Tpk=tahiti%20le

its a "7930", probably the best card at that price point.

stay away from the Sapphire HD 7870 cards based on the Pitcairn chip. sapphire has the most problems due to a board design flaw on the HD 7870 cards using the Pitcairn chip.

http://www.behardware.com/news/12705/black-screens-and-radeon-hd7870-a-solution.html

go for the Sapphire HD 7870 XT with boost which uses the Tahiti LE chip. this card uses a Tahiti chip (which powers HD 7970) with portions disabled. It is a completely different design and is not affected by the problems on the normal sapphire HD 7870.

www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202024

th Tahiti LE chip has 1536 stream processors at 975 mhz vs 1280 mhz stream processors at 1000 mhz on regular HD 7870 . Tahiti LE has 256 bit memory at 6 Ghz vs 256 bit memory at 5 Ghz on regular HD 7870. costs USD 260 (245 after mail in rebate). the sapphire card has a much better cooler than the powercolor pcs+ myst hd 7870 (tahiti le). at stock speeds matches HD 7950(800 mhz). when overclocked to 1.2 ghz matches HD 7970 (925 mhz)

Tahiti LE reviews

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Club_3D/HD_7870_jokerCard_Tahiti_LE/

also get a FX-8320 to save some money . it has an unlocked multiplier and can be overclocked to 4.5+ Ghz. use the money saved to get the sapphire HD 7870 XT

Your fears are unfounded. The model he chose is a newer and updated HD 7870 PCB that no longer contains the flaw. The 7870 XT you listed is $60 out of his budget, which is a lot. Also, the FX-8350 is a binned chip, and it's only $10 more than the FX-8320 at this moment on newegg. $10 savings isn't going to get him a 7870 XT.

@DarkSire, that card is fine. Get it, and enjoy it. thumb.gif

No the issue still persists. look at the amount of users who have the issues. half the users have given 1 or 2 egg reviews.

I have a current Sapphire HD 7870 OC, and the issue is not present in my card. I bought my card over 2 months ago, and it's been rock solid the entire time. The card he chose is an even newer model than mine (mine has been discontinued), so the issue is not present any longer.

EDIT: There are bad batches of cards. It happens. I went through 5 different HD 5870's before I finally got one that didn't either die on me or the cooling fan went out. It's part of buying enthusiast hardware (yes, an HD 7870 is a $200+ video card, so it is enthusiast grade.)

It's ok if you suggest another card, but suggesting a more expensive card from the same manufacturer which is out of his price range is a mistake.
