Upgrade question

I'm getting a ASUS rampage extreme. I wanted to get 2 GTX 690's in quad SLI mod. AS im looking on web sites there Does not seem to be any room left for a Sound card at all. Is it possible to use a sound card or do i have to buy differnet video cards to fit the Sound card?. I only ask because when i look at Pictures theres no room for anything else. I might just get 3 680's instead. What do you think.

Yes, looking at the board, there is a PCI-E slot (black) at the top that can be used for soundcards.

You're good to go in that respect. What other components are you using because isn't that a 775 motherboard? I'm wondering if you're going to have a bottleneck....

I looked again there are 6 slots and the small black is second to last. I still don't know if it will fit.

Oh, you didn't mention it being the Rampage IV, I was a little confused for a second as that's some high end hardware on an old motherboard.

Yes, there is a slot for the sound card but it depends on what slots you have your GPU's in as to whether you going to be able to use it or not. I haven't toyed with SLI in a long time but on older boards it had certain slots to use, 1 and 3 for example.

If this is the case for this board then it looks as if you won't be able to use the sound card but if you can use the two top slots then you'll be fine.

Just a but of advice, with the newer cards out soon, it's probably not worth going for 2 690's. Quad SLI is renowned for issues on it's own but the prices are also likely to drop once the newer cards are out.

If you must get a card now, I'd probably get 1 690 and upgrade when the newer cards are out. You'll struggle to find a game that will run poorly on that card. You just need some one to confirm the slots for SLI on the motherboard but I hope I helped somewhat.

Crooks.
