i5 3570K stuck @ 4.8GHz(not what you think)

Thread Starter
So I had been trying to get my i5 3570K to be stable @ 4.8GHz for a while now, but even at 1.45v I couldn't do it & I was reaching my temp max there. So I decided to settle for lower & dropped it to 4.6. So I set it for 4.6 & lower my voltage accordingly. The BIOS shows everything ok, so I boot to windows. BSOD. Raise voltage a little & try again... BSOD. Raise voltage to 4.3 & I finally got into windows, but just barely as I found out later. I open RealTemp first thing as I always to to make sure everything is cooling correctly, & it seems fine.

Here comes the interesting part:

I open CPU-Z, voltage is where it should be around 1.43v. Core speed however... is still 4.8GHz, along with the multiplier being x48. Thinking I forgot to save the setting or something I boot back into BIOS & check... 4.6/x46... Boot to windows... CPU-Z says 4.8/x48.

No matter what I set my multiplier to it appears to be stuck @ 48...

Anyone seen this before or know a fix? I'm currently trying a few things myself but thought I would share anyway just in case.

MOBO: Asus P8Z77-V LX

Let me know if you need anymore info. I'm stumped... Didn't even know this could happen. >.>
Edit:

OK, Still not sure why it happened, but I managed to get it to drop by reinstalling & using ASUS AI Suite II. I had uninstalled it previously because it didn't seem to be working very well. constantly freezing up & forcing me to relaunch it. Maybe that had something to do with it?

If anyone has insight as to what might have caused this let me know so that I can aviod it in the future. As for now I'll be keeping ASUS AI Suite II installed just in case...

Take a look in these two areas and make sure they are set to Auto:

Ai Tweaker\ CPU Power Management - CPU Ratio

Advanced\ CPU Configuration\ CPU Power Management Configuration - CPU Ratio

Both of those have to be set to Auto.

Also, look for "Turbo Mode" in both of these areas of the UEFI BIOS and set them to Enabled.

Your title is misleading, you have exactly what I think.
You have the Asus bios bug, and I have lost track of how many people have encountered it.

Reflash bios and you will be OK.

o.O I couldn't find anything on this by searching. My apologies.

I will try reflashing my BIOS as I have a feeling AI Suite is only temp fixing it because of it's nature of changing the clocks on the spot.

Yeah, AI Suite applies the overclock once Windows loads it during startup.

Be aware that you will most likely encounter it again. I have a USB stick with the properly renamed BIOS file and a couple BIOS profiles just sitting here ready to be used once again.

When you are making a number of changes to BIOS, like when you are testing to find your stable overclock, both the P8Z77 and Asus Maximus BIOS get corrupted somehow and it will not allow your changes to go through. I have even documented instabilities it has caused even though it was allowing my changes to go through.

Basically if you see something strange going on, reflashing bios may help.

I wonder if this is why I've been having programs randomly crashing on my for seemingly no reason... Well regardless, thanks a ton for your help. I lurk these forums quite often but rarely post because my questions are usually already answered. Good to know if I ever need help there are people who will jump on it quickly too. smile.gif

Yup this bug is annoying. I can only make around 4-6 changes in my bios before I havto reflash it which takes 2 secs but still lol... so I usually just count changes right now im finally stable and changed it only once so.
