[news.com.au] Aus Federal Government forces Apple, Microsoft and Adobe to testify in pricing... - Page 12

I remember GTX690 here was priced at $2200-$2400 NZD (~$1850 - $2000 USD) for quite a while after it was released. Let that sink in. Today the cheapest you will find it is still $1800 NZD ($1500 USD), so it still costs 50% more than what it does in US....but I guess it beats paying 100% more, right?

Part of the reason will always be demand, NZ has far lesser demand so getting products into the country just for a couple of people presents a prime opportunity for warehouses/retailers in both Aus and NZ to gouge the price like MAD.

If and when GeForce Titan does hit stores in NZ, due to the card being in such short supply I'm not even going to try to imagine what it will cost. Probably $2500-$3000 NZD, hahaha. I could buy a car for that much.

It would be such a significant loss of corporate tax revenue, jobs, and GDP. And you're right I don't give much credence to the Australian government, since it doesn't have that much power compared to the United States of Europe. If this was the U.S., or Europe, or even china, these industries would be much more afraid since the markets are exponentially larger than Australia. Australia needs the tech giants more than the tech giants need Australia--there are so many other markets tech corporations could focus on if Australia decided to ban them, which wouldn't even be legal in Australia because they actually have a judicial system that protects industry against the government.

To be fair, their products are revolutionary, one of a kind and high end just like Microsoft's products so they get that right. Adobe has programs, same as Microsoft, for people who cannot afford it. So I support them on their endeavors. However, their pricing in different countries and such is much different so they should find out why this is happening.

Well my questions are what are the taxes and costs to import. Then there's currency conversion to take in account because just because something might be 1.2k NZD and 1k in the US doesn't mean that's the cost of converting between the currencies. Of course...if there are such substantial price discrepancies then Australia could just nullify any region/licensing rules and encourage arbitragers to make up the difference.

Or...people could not pay for these products and make their own and introduce competition in which everyone wins. But nah...that's too much effort. rolleyes.gif

Got in my car this morning and heard on the news that Adobe has already dropped prices on several of its products in response to the Subpoena's handed out by the Australian federal government. Damn that was quick.thumb.gif

Which goes to show, they were willingly price gouging. Otherwise, they would have challenged it in court, if in fact, there were a legitimate reason for their demanding of higher prices.
