Transoceanic fiber-optic cables don't come cheap. Stringing up and maintaining thousands of miles of cable under the Pacific to serve a remote, sparsely-populated continent containing more dingos than people isn't a very cost-efficient exercise on a per-capita basis. I'm not saying that explains all or even a majority of it, but it's a factor nonetheless.

except that these companies ARE NOT paying for said cable. Our ISPs are (which is why we're getting the crap gouged out of us for that too).

In that case it wouldn't necessarily be a gouge, trying to repair a repeater in the ocean doesn't sound like fun. What is the cost of internet and what are the speeds generally available?

That should give you an idea of what we get over here (although mine is a little slower than the Speedtest.net average), and we pay $120 a month for it. 200GB data cap too D:
The sad part is that my phone can acheive equivalent download speeds as well as uploads more than 4x faster, and it's on HSDPA, not a fixed line.

Thats brutal, but you're slower than 65% of AUS, and you're in Brisbane. I'll have to have a look at a pop density map, but I thought more of the population was around sydney and south of there.

I say this because my Aussie gamer friends usually talk about how awesome their net is, I'm not sure if that is because of your region lacking competition, or what..

The "slower than x%" or "faster than x%" isn't accurate.

The average speed in the UK is 9 Mbps (as of 2012), if I truly was "faster than 95% of GB" then the national average would be a lot higher than 9 Mbps

Thats brutal, but you're slower than 65% of AUS, and you're in Brisbane. I'll have to have a look at a pop density map, but I thought more of the population was around sydney and south of there.

I say this because my Aussie gamer friends usually talk about how awesome their net is, I'm not sure if that is because of your region lacking competition, or what..
The whole of our country lacks decent competition on the ISP front, since one ISP controls ALL of the copper wiring in Australia (Telstra), and the primary form of internet connection is via ADSL, which (as you can guess) is delivered via copper. Most of the wiring is utter utter crap, and has been there for years, which means it's all degraded. We do have the NBN coming, which will bring FTTH (assuming the opposition gov. don't get into power and change it to FTTN, which will fix NOTHING). This is a result from when I used to live in Sydney:

We can use the american servers just fine it'll just take a few minutes longer, The internet as a whole works fine, hell my steam games come from aMERICAN content servers, This is no differant, 6.8Gb is still 6.8GB no matter the point of origin.



Also if you go to the NBN map @ aussies Anywhere thats currently highlighted future, currently being built, Or finished will be utilised as FTTH reguardless of what the opposition does.

The average speed in the UK is 9 Mbps (as of 2012), if I truly was "faster than 95% of GB" then the national average would be a lot higher than 9 Mbps

It certainly seems in the ballpark. You don't know if it's including outliers like.. people (companies) with direct gb+ lines, which could really warp numbers when you're talking about an average of 9mb.
