I actually don't think all things in Australia are overpriced. Apple products are usually some of the cheapest in the world.

If you want to know the real tragedy, its the price of cars in Australia. 911 in Australia costs $260k!

Another good example is Microsoft's MSDN subscription.. It's about 13k for the US and 23k~ for the same subscription over here... It's all digital content as well so you can't blame shipping costs etc on that one.

In Microsoft's defense, they have to take the additional step of reversing all the 1s and 0s of their binary code for the Southern Hemisphere. Has the Aussie gubmint provided the cost of operating imposed by gubmint info and then determined that the consumer price was outside of the normal margin? Just wondering because if a company has to spend 5-6 million to operate in a country to get 15000 unit sales that is 400-ish dollars per customer that needs to be recouped to maintain standard margin. Accounting for a normal margin is one thing but that discounts the ROI of even bothering with doing business in another country and the premium that is usually attached to make it worthwhile.

Just saying, I tried to buy some Holden parts a while back and the export duty that they wanted to charge made it cheaper to get the stuff custom made in the US. If they are penalizing export they are penalizing import too.

edit- Australia isn't a terribly business friendly place in the first place and there isn't a really huge consumer base to offset the imposed fixed costs to.
