[Twitter] Sim City 5 Main Sim + Game Loop Will Be Single-Threaded - Page 18

You guys do realize, you can run more than 1 city at a time right? Use cities to build off of each other. There is a little more dept to the game than beta's one area lock.

First of all, you can't compare the movie industry (who only need to make movies at 1920x1080 and nothing higher) to the gaming industry (where there is more than a resolution to deal with)

Second, you're contradicting yourself there. You say you can't afford a 70" screen but you still have the ability to enjoy a movie on a smaller TV yet you are complaining about a game dev who isn't making a game that can take full advantage of a 2500K, 8 GB RAM and a GTX 670. Well guess what, some PC gamers can't afford a rig like that. They are stuck with i3s, 4 GB RAM and GTX 450. Why should they have to "suffer" because they can't run a game your rig can just so a dev can make $50 out of one person instead of $300 out of many?

Third, do you know what the system requirements for Sim City 4 is?

500MHz Pentium 3
128 MB RAM
32 MB DX compatible 3D GPU.

At the time (2003) the average gaming rig had a 2.5 GHz P4/2.5 GHz Athlon XPs, 512-1024 MB RAM and a 64-128 MB GPU. People back weren't running around saying "hurr durr it doesn't take full advantage of my rig therefore I'm not buying it and it's stupid."

The majority of the movie industry actually films on 4K, that being the resolution of all major theaters run films at. BR is 4K downscaled to 1080p, DVDs are downscaled to 720p.

So, there goes your entire point.

Actually, DVDs are downscaled to standard definition - 480p in NTSC and 576p in PAL. Your point still stands though. smile.gif

The EA spin machine at work.

There is a lot of me which doesn't really care as long as it is Sim City but there is no denying that EA is impeccable and blatant when it comes to testing peoples principles.

No wonder this game ran like crap...

So all this super advanced, individual thought and action people/cars,etc will all be under a single-thread? FAIL.

Definitely not getting this game... basically is a limited console port, compared to SC4, but it is not even for consoles!

But having the actual simulation on a single thread isnt uncommon.

Like Alatar said, its common to RTS everywhere.
1 thread handles simulation, others handle sound, etc.

Still, if single thread performance is important this game may be very rough on the AMD crowd
.

Exactly my thoughts.

I still view this title as a moneygrab though. I've grown to expect no less from Maxis/EA over the years. The Sims really hit an alltime low with the release of numerous "Stuff" packs with limited content, and i expect SimCity to go a similar path.

LOL, good point. We all know the bull EA come out with though, so nobody can be surprised that they're blatantly caught in a lie. Cloud computing/gaming gives them more control, and more control over their income(DRM), that's really their only agenda.

Actually, no it doesn't. It doesn't matter whether they film at 4k or 8k or 200k, what matters is that they only have one standard to adhere to. Whereas gaming is extremely dynamic, and computers cover a wide range of specs.

Also, it's extremely hard to make the core logic anything other than single threaded, since almost everything about natural game progression relies on the previous results. Sure, you can try to make each sector of a city an independent thread, but they all have to interact, and you're back to that central logic thread governing everything.

Anyway, this news is disappointing, but I don't think it needs to be a deal breaker. It could still be a good game regardless.

no this news is MORE THAN disappointing.

I mean seriously, let's not talk about how this game should be or should have been, let's just look at other games EA do. NFS series, BF series and all those graphically amazing games.

You meant to tell me that when they go back to the all time champion city builder series they suddenly need to go single thread?

That's a big pile of bull right there.
