[CG] Crytek To Focus Solely On Free To Play Games. - Page 5

From what I can see, there is both some hate and some love for this. Maybe a little more heat than love, but I can see that to be expected as it is a 'change' in what is currently being done and people don't like change. Overall a company can be VERY successful with F2P games, it just involves a bit more finesse than your typical full blown retail game. TF2 did not start free to play, you paid $20 and it came with a set amount of items and levels and such, after a few years, they then went F2P BUT, did not sacrifice the integrity of the game in the process. You still get the same items and levels and characters as you did when the game was first released, ll the new items you can pay to get, OR you can find them just like all of the other people do. So you really don't have to spend a dime to be on equal level. If other games follow this suit, then they can be just as successful. Make the pay for items aesthetic only, anything that you are able to pay for, you should be able to get just by playing the game as well. This is the most fair way of getting it done. I have played, TF2, Tribes Ascend, League of Legends, Blacklight Retribution, World of Tanks and a few other games as well that I can't think of off the top of my head and they all have potential or have already taken off. This will be the industry standard, and as long as they do it right, people will be happy and they will succeed. The ones that do not, will not last long.

tldr; Do it right, they will come. Do it wrong, they will never trust another game from you.

Make all the cash purchases purely cosmetic. Don't let people buy power/advantage.

That's literally all you have to do. It's simple as dimples.thumb.gif

Exactly, look at TF2, League of Legends, Dota 2, Path of Exile..I can name a lot more. They are all purely cosmetic games when it comes to micro transactions yet they are incredible games that I gladly tend to spend 20$ on. That is usually my set budget if I start a new F2P game with Cosmetics, I'll spend tops of 20$ to support he company.

Personally I like to have some F2P games out there. It's nice, because I can play the game all I want, and decide if I like it without investment. If I decide, after say 10 hours of play, that I don't like it after all: I drop it, no harm no foul. That's contrary to buying a $60 dollar game and dropping it because it wasn't what I thought it was.

So, you start a cool looking F2P game, then decide it's pay2win? Uninstall! How hard is that? Honestly, no matter what you think, too many games are moving to either subscription based accounts or DLC. Would you rather pay full price for a game, AND have to buy content to keep up? Now, we are seeing stuff like release-day DLC, and even on disc DLC.... Give me a break! And don't even get me started on subscription based games. WoW costs $180 a year, and thats AFTER having to buy the game AND all of the expansions! And people wonder why Blizzard does whatever it wants to anymore; they own a massive cash cow.

So many OCNers overreact about this stuff anyway. One company says they are trying something, and half of you blow a gasket and take it as the path of the future. Oh noes! Every single developer will pick up this model now! Relax and have a beer, people.

After I forked over $120 to Piranha Games for MechWarrior Online as a founder and got totally cheated out of it from their crap in the end. Thus, I'm very bitter against F2P games in general now

TF2 isn't purely cosmetic, different weapons have different effects that is why i stopped playing; but i agree with you on the rest of the LoL, Dota 2 and PoE are all great as in they only feature cosmetic items. Although path of exile is by far my favorite biggrin.gif not that i don't play a lot of Dota 2 and LoL.

I find it interesting people are assuming that people pay more for F2P games, on average, than normal games. Sure some people pay hundreds of dollars of stuff, just like some people won't spend any money whatsoever. For developers, the real advantage is the amount of people playing and spending money. It is also a lot of encouragement for F2P developers to create good content. If their content sucks, no one will pay for it. If it is good, like League of Legends or Path of Exile, than people will gladly fork over money.

If done properly, the only negative of F2P games is the lack of a singleplayer, unless Crytek plans to release a separate game for campaigns. It will be interesting to see how things work out as time goes on.

It's not an assumption. On average, paying customers spend more on a FTP game than they do on a BTP game.

Its a mental thing, the same reason why marketing and stores sell things with .95 or .99 cents vs just even prices because it "tricks" peoples brains into purchasing products that look cheaper as a result.

There are big studies on this if you look around.
