Is this laptop good?

Thread Starter
I'm getting this laptop soon. HP Pavilion g6t-2300 Select Edition Notebook PC
It has 15.6", 1366x768 resolution, Windows 8 64-bit, Intel Core i5 2450m, 4GB RAM, 500 GB (I think), ATI Radeon HD 7670m 1GB and that is pretty much it,
It'll cost 648 plus tax and shipping.
Do you think this laptop is good for the tasks that I am doing?

Tasks: Programming and Animations.
Programming: Microsoft Visual Studio C# 2010 and Animations is Autodesk and Adobe softwares.

Oh, yeah, I'll upgrade the RAM and HDD for SSD maybe.

The card isn't great, for serious video editing you might need something better, maybe not. Will you be doing any gaming?
For video editing, you need at least twice that amount of ram (8GB min)
the CPU should be ok too, however is the encoding/exporting part whats
going to really cause overheating issues on it
(depending on how serious the video editing part is, like effects, filters,
transitions, text titles, video resolutions, live previews etc.)

In addition to what other people have said, is there an option to upgrade the screen to a 1080p one? I've done some animation in Autodesk Maya and I find it much nicer to animate on a 1080p screen as the menus are smaller and the viewport is larger and easier to work with.

I was kind of confused as to you intentions with this computer, if you are talking about programs such as Sony Vegas and others of that caliber. You will need twice as much ram and a 1080 p screen

If it's for Vegas, you'll want to make sure you snag a laptop with an Nvidia GPU. The program can utilize CUDA to allow for faster rendering. My dad uses it. As long as it uses a Generation 400 series GeForce card or later, you're good. The 645M isn't super great, but it's better than your CPU will be if you planned on doing a bit more rendering/editing.

I had a 17" HP pavilion, it would overheat just surfing the web if the room temperature was above 80F. If you are considering doing anything like ,maya, poser blender or Das that may require your laptop to render and compile data for many hours , make sure that the model you purchase does not have any cooling issues. just do a google search for HP cooling issues and see how many pages come up. I also like to search for products on amazon and read the reviews.
for instance , I was considering the go pro hero 3 black edition camera. I looked on amazon reviews. with almost 1000 reviews. the camera was getting 50% 5 star ratings and 50% 1 star ratings . no 2,3 or 4 star ratings. they are having software issues and half the cameras are freezing up.
I purchased a 15.6" Sager/Clevo over a year ago now I am spoiled , do a google search sometime (who really makes laptops) you may get sick like NEO in the matrix after you understand that HP,sony and dell dont even build laptops..the real players are MSI,Clevo,Lenovo
my sager allows me to change the GPU,CPU,RAM, without voiding the warranty, it comes apart with 4 screws for cleaning of the heatsinks and fans,
just message me if you have any ?'s
