New Dell PERC 5i

Thread Starter
So I just picked this bad boy up from eBay for a wopping $10.

I already know I need a breakout cable, found one here, WIN, but I will also need a battery and cable. I would like to know exactly where to get them and know exactly what I am getting.

Things I know:

1. It needs cooling
2. It needs cooling
3. It needs Bandwidth

Things I need to know:

1. compatibility issues with my system below
2. mods that will need to be done to put it in a non-workstation board

Things I want to know:

1. Can I upgrade the cache and if so, with what
2. how much can this card handle bandwidth wise
3. how durable they are

My plans are to move my current raid array over there, it is currently composed of a pair of Samsung F3 500gb in raid 0. I also want to build a raid 5/6 array with a 1-2tb drives. I was thinking a 6 array with WD cavi greens (the EARS models) since I have one already and I can get them for about $60 a piece.

It needs airflow... it's designed for servers with high-speed fans.

It doesn't need any special bandwidth... I believe it maxes out at around 1GB/s so even x4 PCIe 1.x is enough.

No way to know if it will work other than trying it. You may have to cover the two SMBus pins to get it to work in some motherboards.

Yes, you can upgrade the cache but how much is that DIMM?

It's a server RAID controller... it's durable because it's for servers!

you can upgrade it to 512mb if it has 256mb cache as long as you use 512mb PC3200 400Mhz DDR-2 ECC Registered Single Rank CL3 1.8V *single sided* (1Rx8 or 1Rx16)

i would not waste it for RAID0, it would not have much advantage over fakeraid controller. RAID5 with 1.5-2tb drives is a good idea, i would however not use WD greens, they are reported to cause issues in RAID arrays - try Hitachi or WD reds instead.

Alright, I was just moving the array over so I only have to wait for one raid controller to boot up.

Would flipping my power supply over work for cooling? I will have the Perc right up against it in the bottom x8 slot on my motherboard.

It has 256mb of ram so I can upgrade it.

What would be good drives that I can get for around $70 a piece?
