Can Board Handle ~ 4.0-4.5Ghz?

As the title says, I'm wondering if my board (Details in signature under First Born) would be able to handle an overclock of anywhere from 4Ghz to 4.5Ghz (Tops). Apparently the board supports up to 140TDP with 4+1 Phase and does have a heatsink on the MOSFETs although I'm probably going to add the fan from the stock AMD cooler that I no longer use for extra cooling. Thoughts?

It's been a while since I had my AMD rig, but if I remember right 4+1 phase on 140W TDP chips with overclocking was a bit dodgy. For reference, I had a Crosshair IV Formula with 8+1 phases and it ran my Phenom II X6 at 4.0GHz, 1.45 V without issues.

Yeah I started learning about phases, vrms, and what not after I got the board and actually the processor isn't 140TDP it just supports up to that. I calculated the estimated TDP using a formula someone posted on another thread of mine in regards to my power supply and it came out to around 146 TDP with guestimated voltages.

According to CPU-Z my TDP is 124 which would leave a bit of room I would think.

Anyone else have comments/opinions about overclocking on this board? Trying to get a general idea before I go ahead and spend the next few days overclocking, stability testing, etc.

I wouldn't trust CPU-Z (or any software) about TDP.

The only 4+1 AM3 motherboard that can handle extreme overclocking is
Biostar TA990FXE that I know of. But the ASRock 970FX Extreme3 does
throttle to protect your system. Overclocking shouldn't be cookie cutter
style. Take you time and overclock at 100MHz increments from stock.
See what you end up with.

The ASRock 970FX Extreme3 is a very nice budget motherboard. Good
digital VRM design. Plus you got a 990X chipset (8X/8X Crossfire) if I remember
correctly. just keep an eye on your vrm temp. add a fan on top or if your case good
air flow (V3 is same same my Dokker - Xigmatek XLF XLF-F1703 170mm is the
only case fan that fits over the heatsink but will cool your VRMs on your motherboard).

The only modern ASRock motherboard I have used is the 970DE3-U3S3 and it
isn't close to the 970FX Extreme3. But it was 100% with and unlocked x4 B50 at stock
3.10GHz (CPU-z says 140W unlocked).

Good Luck with your overclocking.

No problem.

I could run the same board with a 4 core Phenom II up to 4.45GHz .
an X6 up to 4.1GHz. keep the VRM's as cool as possible and you are good to go. thumb.gif

Yeah I know not to trust anything solely based on software; it also states it's a 125W TDP on Newegg when I looked it up (pretty sure I got it from Newegg).

Sweet, thinking about starting to overclock it today. Working out something to help VRM cooling; planned to use the fan from the stock AMD cooler but can't get it to fit (easily that is) or by getting a new heatsink + Antec SpotCool.
