24/7 OC worth it?

Thread Starter
Hello everyone, I have an MSI gtx 580 Twiin Frozr, and I was wondering if doing a 24/7 OC on it was worth it performance wise, would I actually see a difference?
I'm currently running with the stock cooler:
Cvolt : 1050
CClock: 800
Shader Clock 1600
Memory Clock 2048
Fan auto

Looking forward to see you answeres biggrin.gif

i don't see why not?

I fired up my EVGA 580 as soon as i took it out of the box, to make sure it worked. Then rebooted and flashed it with a moded BIO's that allowes more voltage control, and its ran at a 950 core since the day i bought it.

I don't see much reason to run a 24/7 GPU overclock unless you are always playing games. You can set up a GPU profile to overclock with one click of the mouse when you need it.

if your fan is set to auto via its own built in settings then no that would not be good for 24/7. I suggest setting your own parameters for the fans auto settings aka Afterburners predefined fan control
post #5 of 24
I have my 2 570s at 850/1700/1900 @ 1.05v 24/7 and with the custom fan profile setup in afterburner they don't get over 70deg thumb.gif

Edit - This is called 'OVERCLOCK.NET'. I'd overclock my USB ports if I could biggrin.gif

Thanks for the answers, I was busy fixing my CPU OC and forgot I did this post biggrin.gif
Does anyone have good tutorials to overclock a gtx 580? I'll probably do like losttsol said and do an OC profile for when I game. It's true no point having it running an OC when the pc is just idle.

Ok manage to get a decent 900Mhz Core Clock on my gtx, I'm just wondering what fan setting should I put it on?

Also the manufacturer says the card should havethe memory clock speed at 4096 Mhz, yet MSI afterburn says I only have 2048, is this normal?

There isn't any problem running your card overclocked while doing something such as posting on a forums, watching a movie, etc. It's not like your card is running at 100% like it is when playing games. The fan curve is up to you. I personally have it set so that if the card hits 70 degree's the fan will be at 80%. Though my single card normally doesn't go above 65% fan speed at around 62 degree's. Play around with it until your happy as some aftermarket coolers can get pretty loud.

It's fine running at a constant overclock. I do it. Even though I have a .bat file to switch between idle and OC. I just keep it on OC the whole time because I always forget to turn it back on if I set it on idle.

As long as your card doesn't run at really high temperatures, there's really no problem at all. It's high temperatures that tear away on the life span of your card.
