7970 Voltage Overclocking Should I?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I was planning on buying a couple of 7970s from XFX to replace my current 6870s in crossfire. I wanted to buy two at first, then two more, then put them all underwater. Problem is, one, I don't know if I should get the Black Edition or the GHz edition. Two, I've been hearing a lot of chatter going around about the new 7970s are voltage locked. That's the whole reason I wanted to get the 7970s. My 6870s are voltage locked.

So, is there any way I could get an 7970 from XFX and still modify the voltage? Or should I just wait until the 8000 series? I really REALLY want those 7970s and only from XFX.

Thanks

Why not MSI or HIS, they are the best 79xx card makers. Both are unlocked. But you will have to wai until 2014 untill 8xxx cards to come out

Well, I like the limited life-time warranty from XFX. They allow you to remove the heatsink, mod the BIOS, everything. Just as long as you put everything back if something goes wrong.

Plus I like the branding.

That's great but the cards suck. Do your homework so you dont end up making a thread like "my cards are voltage locked what can I do?" Nothing!

Why XFX ?

Had a problem with an XFX warrenty and have not owned one since.

7970 Matrix is the only clear choice for this chip ATM

Think newer lightnings are locked at 1.21

So I can't do ANYTHING with the XFX 7970? I mean what's 300 more MHz anyway? I heard that's what most people only go up to. I can just get a few clocked at 1GHz and it should still be pretty good... Plus, I don't really want to wait until freakin' 2014 for an upgrade. I just got three 1920x1080 monitors and I need somethin' beefy to play them on.

Any other problems I should know about?
