Computer Upgrade/Repair

Thread Starter
I don't know if this in the right forum, but I will just assume it is.

So my mobo just recently crapped out on me so I'm in need of upgrade. I'm on a budget of $315 USD, so I would rather go with AMD, because of speed for price. I could push the budgeted price a little higher if need be.

I'm in search of advice, and also have a few questions.

Q: How does the the AMD Phenom II x4 965 pair up against the AMD FX-6xxx?

Q: Does the FX platform need to have a certain northbridge, like 990X/FX or can it have a 7-series?

Here what I'm looking at right now for upgrades!!!

Motherboard

Processor

RAM

And then I'm debating whether or not to get a NZXT Vulcan case or a pair of Roccat Kaves'

You should be able to do much better for 8gb at $50. For 1333Mhz that's just too much.
Smart choice on the Phenom. They still outperform the FX series.

I second this. Maybe pick up a hyper 212 evo for cheap and OC that Phenom.

I have almost the same build. I've OC'd the 965 BE as high as 4.3GHz. Not a 24/7 clock. but is 24/7 at 4.0. I love this Processor. You can't go wrong with low cost and good performance. I would definently recommend this build.

The only issue I have with this is I don't have an eight pin on my PSU and i'm trying to fit all this in a mid-tower

I agree with the board. Even if you decide to go with the fx 8350 8 core later you can. The board can also handle 32g of ddr3 2000 oc or 1866 without issues.
