[GR]Steam Box To Be ‘Cheaper Than Consoles,’ Eventually Down To $0 - Page 3

I'm very interested to see how the seam box turns out. I won't be getting one but if it has some interesting controller I would want one for my PC tongue.gif

So no, you will probably not be driving to the store to pick up a $0 steambox, or getting one for $0 after rebate.

That sounds pretty disappointing, only advantage I see to that is if I had a big full tower rig (not on wheels like mine tongue.gif) and couldn't be bothered to move it if I had a larger monitor say in the living room. Am I missing something? thinking.gif (sorry about being Debby Downer btw...).

When they say it will eventually reach $0 all that means is that they're going to have the streaming client on a device you already own so that you don't have to make any sort of investment to use it, similar to how Onlive has clients on mobile phones/smart TVs and so on.

I agree that the lowest tier option doesn't seem that impressive, but I still think it's pretty cool. The real steambox stuff I'm excited for is the "best" option biggrin.gif if you want to know more, I'm pretty sure there's a link to an interesting presentation by Gaben in the article.

I'm a big fan of Gabe and Valve but sounds too good to be true, but from the way they talk about it i'd wager they're going with an AMD APU...

Well I would assume that valve would make their money through the in game content they will have. You know the F2P bandwagon everyone is moving onto?

Scary to think, Gabe just might be crazy enough to do it.

After all these years of talking about revenue increasing disproportionately to sale price, he might actually give the thing away for free.

Your missing that many people that are PC gamers don't have the option of moving their PC so this would be perfect for playing your PC games in other rooms of your house. If this thing can work with very little lag I want it. My computer is 2 flights of stairs from my main living room and weighs a ton so this is pretty cool for me.

Not to mention that it would eliminate the need for a separate console since you could do casual gaming, and play games with friends on your couch without needing to move your PC around.

and personally I'm more excited by this than any other steambox. I already spend a lot of money on my main rig, I dont want/need a separate steambox with it's own set of parts.

The next generation is shaping up to be very exciting. I can't wait to see what the steam box brings, even if I never get one wink.gif

This makes me think of Amazon! Sell devices or get your userbase in at a loss or breakeven but your profit comes from massive variable cost as compared to the fixed cost.

I approve of this business model.

Hmm, I have mixed feeling about this. I can see how they are thinking from the business perspective, but I am also not sure how well it would sit with the majority of society who are already so hooked on the "Xbox, PS, Nintendo" theme of console life. I guess we just have to wait, and see! But I hope it does work they want it to!

It's a way to get a massive audience quickly. It's very similar to the Free-to-Play model that certain MMO's use.
