H20 580 vs SLI 480 - Page 2

Depends what you play and the settings used. I run 1600P (2560x1600) and a few games dont use 1.5gb. This obsession with mega vram is becoming more and more prevalent, but single monitor 1440P is not 'hardcore'.

I can't use AMD cards due to a special OS that i can't talk about here on OCN.

Yes both the 4 and 580 have 1.5gigs of vram, which is enough ( though not ideal ) for my monitor.

Edit: and my current PSU is an Antech High power 750w unit

I suppose for now i'll just buy a cheap 300w PSU, jump the 24 pin and use it to power 1 of the GPU's and fans, as my 750w should be enough to push the rest of the rig. Then i'll just post everything up for sale on CL, either way i'll make a little bit of money in the deal.

Grab them, Sell em hopefully for profit and get another gtx580. Either way I have been super happy with my gtx480's in SLi. Probably the best hard-ware purchase I have ever made. Plays every game maxed out on 1900x1080 resolution. Crysis 3 beta, Battlefield 3, Dead Space 3, Etc...

any idea how long 480's might still be relevant? it seems they are ball park with a 680, so obviously the 770~ should probably be better than 480's at around an traditional $4-450 range

Am I? Please explain this then "480 SLI may be more power but will be a down grade in terms of 1440p performance" How is 480 SLI a downgrade from a single 580 in terms of 1440p performance?

agreed, my options are clearly listed, yes i know there are other cards, but right now, its either a single 580 vs sli 480s ( plus the cash for another PSU )

I vote SLI 480's if you can get the power supply situation sorted out like you said. Don't be too worried about the heat of the 480's just crank the fan profile up, mine sit at 70% fan and they both stay at 58*c / 57*c sitting idle. Then when gaming they typically never go over 70*c and that's with them using 95-100% of their gpu power.

Both cards lack the appropriate VRAM to drive the resolution. Spending $150 a piece on two used 480's when you already own a 580 and can sell that, then use the $300 you want to spend on the 480's for something more ergonomic and with enough VRAM to support the 1440p resolution. I mean I cannot even play Skyrim anymore on my 670 2GB @ 1080p because of the amount of mods I installed, brings me over 2GB of VRAM. I couldn't even imagine trying to play anything @ 1440p with 1.5GB of VRAM with these newer titles.

The logic in this is just not there. He clearly has $300 to spend on the 480's. You can get $150 easily for a GTX 580. Bringing you to a total of $450. You can get a used EVGA GeForce GTX670 FTW+ for $400 off of Amazon.com

This is the point I'm trying to make. The money can be better spent.

first off, both 480s are $150 total, so if i sell all 3 cards, I'll maybe end up with $3-400

I can understand how a heavily modded skyrim will use up vram, but i hardly ever play skyrim, and when i did, the mods didn't seem to affect the gameplay, frame rates, or visuals.
