1k bad sectors....now what to do?

Thread Starter
Ok so today i installed hard disk sentinel. Was shocked to see my hard drive health status showing only 7% health. Then it came down to 6% within an hour. Also the utility is showing 922 bad sectors. This seagate drive passed short geniric test, however it failed short drive self test, long drive self test and long generic. The hard disk is almost full. Should i give my hard disk for rma and will they accept it?
Whats the min. no of sector fail count for rma'ing the drive?
Thanks.

Ok will have to buy new hdd first, dont know where to store nearly 1tb of data. frown.gif
Any suggestions on which one to buy, main use will be data storage, how is seagate's quality now? Had problems of hdd failing within a year, especially in case of wired external drives. 2tb will do i guess.

If your drive is developing bad sectors as quickly as it seems (health degrading in HD Sentinel), I would not bank on recovering much data. Stop using it, unplug it from your PC and do not attach it to your PC until you're ready to start transferring data. Even though your data appears to transfer over when you get to it, there is a good chance it will be corrupt once it transfers over.....if it's as bad as I think it is.

There are some good hard drive guys here, so hopefully you get some good tips before you try to transfer data off of it. For now, remove the drive until you are ready to transfer data off.

Thanks.

Just get any important documents/pictures/data over to a flash drive, DVD or secondary HDD immediately. That drive is toast. Even better, if you have a Linux live CD, reboot into that before doing anything, and backup your docs from the dying HDD to some other medium. Do it quickly!

If you have any data on your current drive that you cannot afford to loose, leave your hard drive unplugged until you have another to transfer your data to, like silvergoat suggested.

Luckily, modern hard drives have error-correcting code for every sector, so if the data is partially damaged, it can be automatically reconstructed when read. Worst-case scenario: you have 4K sector sizing and none of the bad sectors can be recovered... meaning about 4MB of data is corrupted or gone.

If you want power saving, yes. If you want performance, no. WD Green drives are very slow, in favor of energy saving. A WD Blue or Black would be better, or Seagate Barracuda or Constellation.

If you're asking which brand is more reliable, they're both pretty reliable. I'm running a WD primary drive and Seagate storage drive currently, so I'm not really more of a fan of one over the other. It depends on what you want really. For performance, go with whichever brand happens to be cheaper in the size you're looking for. Look for one that's SATA III (sometimes labeled SATA 6.0 Gb/s), at least 7200 RPM, with the largest cache size in your price range (they typically come in 16 MB, 32 MB and 64 MB). Just get whichever brand happens cheapest with the best specs, but try to avoid the "green" versions unless you're going for power savings over performance.
